Florida records infections each year, usually resulting in a handful of deaths. Severe weather events that cause flooding, such as hurricanes Helene and Ian, have been associated with higher rates of illness and death from the bacterium.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The state has recorded 12 cases so far this season as of July 30, <a data-ylk=\"slk:according to Florida Health data;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.floridahealth.gov\/diseases-and-conditions\/disease\/vibrio-infections\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">according to Florida Health data<\/a>, and one death in Palm Beach County. Infections caused by other types of vibrio bacteria are more common, tallying about 80,000 cases annually.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The risk to the public remains low, but experts have advised that people in coastal areas exercise extra caution while enjoying the waning days of summer. Here&#8217;s what to know.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">What is vibrio vulnificus?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Vibrio vulnificus is a bacterium that causes a serious infection called vibriosis. Different types of vibrio bacteria cause different infections, with vibrio vulnificus causing the &#8220;most serious forms of vibriosis,&#8221; according to the\u00a0<a data-ylk=\"slk:Cleveland Clinic.;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/24884-vibrio-vulnificus\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Cleveland Clinic.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The potentially fatal infection can quickly result in tissue damage and spreading blisters, low blood pressure, fever, organ damage, sepsis and death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Vibrio vulnificus is often referred to as &#8220;flesh-eating&#8221; because it can also cause\u00a0necrotizing fasciitis, a bacterial infection that destroys muscle and skin tissue, causing flesh around wounds to die,\u00a0according to the CDC.\u00a0Vibrio vulnificus is not considered the most common cause of necrotizing fasciitis in the United States, however.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The bacteria and resulting infections are rare but can be life-threatening.
