{"id":22370,"date":"2026-07-30T20:54:36","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T15:54:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=22370"},"modified":"2026-07-30T20:54:36","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T15:54:36","slug":"milei-tightens-immigration-rules-over-anti-argentina-hate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=22370","title":{"rendered":"Milei tightens immigration rules over anti-Argentina hate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdnph.upi.com\/ph\/st\/th\/7561785424785\/2026\/upi\/7ac2f955fd83e10b742d88e853987fe7\/v1.5\/Milei-tightens-immigration-rules-over-anti-Argentina-hate.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<div xmlns:default=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" id=\"\">\n<p><span class=\"story_dl\">July 30 (UPI) &#8212;<\/span> Argentina&#8217;s government on Thursday announced new immigration restrictions that will allow authorities to deny entry or expel foreigners who promote hate speech or incite violence against the country, its citizens or its national symbols.<\/p>\n<p>President Javier Milei enacted the measure through an emergency decree that amends Argentina&#8217;s immigration law.\n<\/p>\n<p>The new rules also allow authorities to revoke the residency of foreigners found to have engaged in those acts.<\/p>\n<p>The decree specifies that the restrictions do not apply to ideological disagreement or to political, academic or civic criticism protected by Argentina&#8217;s Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>Under the changes, hate speech delivered orally or in writing, incitement to violence against Argentines because of their nationality and participation in or encouragement of acts insulting Argentina&#8217;s national symbols will become grounds for denying entry into the country.<\/p>\n<p>The decree also authorizes Argentina&#8217;s National Directorate of Migration to revoke legal residency and order an individual to leave the country or be deported after considering the circumstances of each case.\n<\/p>\n<p>In the decree, the government cited a ruling by Argentina&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/topic\/supreme-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Supreme Court\" class=\"tpstyle\">Supreme Court<\/a> recognizing the country&#8217;s sovereign authority to decide the conditions under which foreign nationals may enter and remain in its territory.<\/p>\n<p>The measure takes effect Friday and will then be reviewed by a congressional committee before lawmakers decide whether to uphold or reject the decree.<\/p>\n<p>Minutes after it was published, Milei&#8217;s office said the move was prompted by what it described as &#8220;recent displays of hostility toward the Argentine Republic and the Argentine people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The defense of the nation, its citizens and its national symbols is non-negotiable. Anyone who attacks the Argentine Republic is not welcome in our country,&#8221; Milei said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The decree comes after Spain&#8217;s victory over Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final triggered a wave of criticism from international celebrities directed at the country and its fans on social media. Argentine officials described the backlash as part of an &#8220;anti-Argentina campaign.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Clar\u00edn reported that a poll found nearly eight in 10 Argentines believe such a campaign exists, while 69.1% said they believe it is being orchestrated. <\/p>\n<p>Milei said the governments of Brazil and Mexico, as well as the U.S. Democratic Party, helped promote that campaign.\n<\/p>\n<p>Among the public figures who criticized Argentina were actor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/topic\/Samuel_L._Jackson\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Samuel L. Jackson\" class=\"tpstyle\">Samuel L. Jackson<\/a>, actress Mia Khalifa, Irish singer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/topic\/Niall_Horan\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Niall Horan\" class=\"tpstyle\">Niall Horan<\/a> and Spanish author Arturo P\u00e9rez-Reverte.<\/p>\n<p>Spanish singer Rosal\u00eda later apologized after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Top_News\/World-News\/2026\/07\/23\/latam-argentina-Rosalia-backlash\/5651784821626\/\" target=\"_blank\">reposting social media content<\/a> mocking Argentina&#8217;s defeat in the World Cup final.<\/p>\n<p>The dispute has also unfolded alongside growing diplomatic tensions between Argentina and Brazil after Milei referred to Brazilian President Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva as a &#8220;thief&#8221; and a &#8220;convict&#8221; during a political event supporting Sen.
