{"id":22348,"date":"2026-07-30T20:29:28","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T15:29:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=22348"},"modified":"2026-07-30T20:29:28","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T15:29:28","slug":"some-states-kept-covid-measures-to-hurt-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=22348","title":{"rendered":"Some States Kept COVID Measures to Hurt Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"post-body\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dr. Deborah Birx says Fauci hearing displayed Americans&amp;apos; &quot;persistent anger&quot; over COVID response\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZMa8gjO9iX4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Dr. <strong>Deborah Birx,<\/strong> who served as the coordinator of the White House Coronavirus Task Force under President <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>, claimed some states kept tight COVID restrictions in place in 2020 \u201cbecause it was an election year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Birx appeared on CBS News\u2019s <em>Takeout With Major Garrett<\/em> Wednesday, where she talked about the politics behind the COVID response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was said today many times by Republicans, or implied rather, that Dr. <strong>[Anthony] Fauci<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/media\/news\/watch-dr-fauci-pleads-the-fifth-over-a-dozen-times-in-the-face-of-rand-pauls-questions\/\">was a villain or a monster<\/a> or someone who had some reckoning to come to because of all the mistakes he made and he foisted on the American public,\u201d Garrett said. \u201cI\u2019d like your evaluation of that line of criticism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think all of us need to be quite honest with ourselves about how not only the information evolved, but the needs for the relevant, what we call, countermeasures, should have also evolved,\u201d Birx responded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do I mean by that? When this first hit, we didn\u2019t have enough testing out there. We couldn\u2019t stop the spread in any way. Hospitals were being overrun. We didn\u2019t have a supply chain that matched the need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd so the first part in the few months were a crisis,\u201d she said. \u201cBut once we got additional therapies, monoclonal antibodies, long-acting monoclonal antibodies, Remdezivir, where there were actually additional treatments, then you can pull back on some of the mitigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Birx added:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>But because it was an election year, there were states that persisted in their very tight mitigations and others that showed us a way that you could open K-12 and higher ed. And I saw it myself. If you gave higher ed tests, they really prevented spread.<\/p>\n<p>And so we should have a dialogue about how are we going to do this next time? How are we going to prevent spread? How do we keep K-12 open? How do we keep higher ed open? How do we keep businesses open? And there\u2019s a way to do it.
