Barbara<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/media\/news\/supreme-court-issues-bombshell-decision-on-birthright-citizenship\/\">the Supreme Court held<\/a> that the executive order <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/politics\/trump\/trump-demands-congress-overturn-birthright-citizenship-today-after-supreme-court-loss\/\">violated<\/a> the Fourteenth Amendment\u2019s language, which did grant citizenship to those &#8220;born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/media\/news\/trump-blows-his-top-at-supreme-court-over-negative-rulings-cost-us-trillions-and-trillions\/\">complained<\/a> about the<em> Trump v. Barbara<\/em> ruling and an earlier Supreme Court opinion knocking down his sweeping &#8220;Liberation Day&#8221; tariffs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes anybody have any idea how much Money and Prestige the United States Supreme Court has cost our Nation with their negative Rulings on Birthright Citizenship and TARIFFS?\u201d the president asked in a Truth Social post shortly after 6 p.m. ET. \u201cThe answer, TRILLIONS AND TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump&#8217;s declarations that the court rulings cost the U.S. &#8220;prestige&#8221; and &#8220;trillions&#8221; of dollars are, like many of his claims, unverified, but also implausible.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s tough to argue the U.S. loses prestige for continuing to do something (grant birthright citizenship) it has done for over a century-and-a-half \u2014 and many other countries do as well. The president has falsely claimed that the United States is the only country to grant birthright citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>CNN fact checker <strong>Daniel Dale<\/strong> has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/online\/cnns-daniel-dale-shreds-trumps-long-debunked-lies-on-latest-supreme-court-rulings\/\">debunked this repeatedly<\/a>, noting \u201c[a]bout three dozen countries provide automatic citizenship to people born on their soil, including Canada, Mexico, and the majority of South American countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And even <a href=\"https:\/\/taxpolicycenter.org\/briefing-book\/do-immigrants-pay-taxes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">illegal immigrants<\/a> pay <a href=\"https:\/\/itep.org\/undocumented-immigrants-taxes-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">billions of dollars<\/a> in taxes every year at the federal, state, and local levels; Americans who are citizens since birth will pay a large variety of taxes over the course of their lifetimes.<\/p>\n<p>The veracity of Trump&#8217;s social media rants aside, if the president is angry that the Supreme Court has ruled against him, he had the option to file a request for the nation&#8217;s highest court to reconsider its decision.<\/p>\n<p>Except, as Politico senior legal affairs reporter<strong> Josh Gerstein<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/07\/29\/supreme-court-birthright-citizenship-ruling-rehearing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pointed out<\/a>, the deadline to do so expired on Monday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed_container\" id=\"3330b7ecf8333724fe59baa9ee7492d7\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">SOUND OF SILENCE: WH and Justice Department mum on Trump&#039;s promise to demand <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/SCOTUS?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SCOTUS<\/a> rehear the birthright citizenship case. Barbara<\/em> was released on June 30, and the court&#8217;s procedural rules set the deadline for filing a rehearing petition at 25 days from the date of the challenged decision.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That period would have ended Monday, since such deadlines don\u2019t expire on weekends,&#8221; wrote Gerstein. &#8220;However, there is no indication of such a filing on the Supreme Court\u2019s docket for the case.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The last entry on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/docket\/docketfiles\/html\/public\/25-365.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">docket<\/a> is the court&#8217;s June 30 ruling; nothing has been filed by any party since then.<\/p>\n<p>Gerstein made &#8220;repeated requests for comment&#8221; to spokespeople at the White House and Department of Justice, but received no response, he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Even if Trump had filed something by Monday&#8217;s deadline, it seems highly unlikely to have changed the result. Getting a rehearing petition granted is &#8220;extraordinarily rare,&#8221; wrote Gerstein, only a &#8220;smattering&#8221; are filed every year, and &#8220;typically seek to challenge the court\u2019s decision not to take up a particular case,&#8221; not overturn an argued case.<\/p>\n<p>Petitioners also have to convince a majority of the court to agree to rehear the case, Gerstein noted. In <em>Trump v. Barbara<\/em>, the court decided 6-3 to toss out Trump&#8217;s executive order.
