While in the previous unit, the 14-year-old bird required oxygen therapy. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an encouraging step forward, but it does not mean she is out of danger,\u201d according to the center, which has treated and sought to diagnose Jackie since she was transferred there on July 18.<\/p>\n<p>When Jackie was rescued from the shore of Big Bear Lake, she was underweight and disheveled. Video footage taken shortly before her capture showed her sparring with two younger eagles, but exams revealed no wounds or broken bones.<\/p>\n<p>The Ojai center\u2019s recent post did not include updates on what might be causing her symptoms, including severe anemia. Experts have ruled out lead toxicity and swallowed objects, but a diagnosis remains elusive.<\/p>\n<p>While in treatment, Jackie <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/environment\/story\/2026-07-23\/still-in-critical-condition-big-bear-eagle-jackie-receives-life-saving-blood-transfusion\">received a life-saving blood transfusion<\/a> from a donor eagle. On Saturday, she <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/environment\/story\/2026-07-27\/after-setback-big-bear-eagle-jackies-health-improves-shes-much-more-feisty\">suffered a setback<\/a> when her blood values dropped again, but she\u2019s been on the mend since.<\/p>\n<p>The center doesn\u2019t refer to its patient as Jackie, but as \u201c26-519,\u201d <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DbYgqEXEy1C\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">noting in another post<\/a> that regulations prohibit it from publicly referring to its charges by names. However, it\u2019s become widely accepted that they\u2019re caring for the famed bird.<\/p>\n<p>Jackie and longtime mate Shadow rose to celeb status through a livestream of their nest that draws thousands of viewers. While Jackie\u2019s health saga unfolds, fans have wondered \u2014 and worried \u2014 what will become of the pair.<\/p>\n<p>Friends of Big Bear Valley, a nonprofit that runs the nest livestream, acknowledged in a <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/FOBBV\/posts\/pfbid02m2AA1uUiaCfUzPV9BYwNumaCZDAFfGKwnweVRXygvFE6v86TE3oYVVDs7qWX4BcFl\" target=\"_blank\">Wednesday social media post<\/a> that it doesn\u2019t know what\u2019s next. After Jackie\u2019s departure, Shadow was <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/environment\/story\/2026-07-23\/still-in-critical-condition-big-bear-eagle-jackie-receives-life-saving-blood-transfusion\">spotted on a perch tree with a subadult eagle<\/a>, who may be a female that briefly fought with Jackie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are all concerned and curious about what the future holds for Shadow, only he knows,\u201d the nonprofit wrote. \u201cWe can say that Shadow is loyal to his nest, territory and Jackie. He may decide to hold out for the long term, he may find a new mate, or he may even leave the Big Bear area. We can only observe, hope for the best and see what the outcome is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The nonprofit said that the plan is to release Jackie back to her home turf if and when she\u2019s healthy and able to hunt and protect herself. <\/p>\n<p>If the two eagles go separate ways, it would be <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/environment\/story\/2026-03-03\/jackie-shadow-story-behind-big-bear-bald-eagle-couple\">the end of an era for the couple that formed in 2018<\/a> when Shadow pushed out Jackie\u2019s former mate.<\/p>\n<p>This nesting season, the pair raised two eaglets \u2014 Sandy and Luna \u2014 who successfully fledged.
