Speaking with <a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/category\/consequence-podcast-network\/kyle-meredith-with\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kyle Meredith<\/a>, director Hanna Bergholm and stars <a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/tag\/Rupert-Grint\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rupert Grint<\/a> and Seidi Haarla unpack the <a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/tag\/Shudder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shudder<\/a> thriller\u2019s unsettling mix of body horror, folklore, and family drama, revealing how the film uses the anxieties of childbirth and the first year of raising a baby to tell a deeply human story. Haarla describes motherhood as \u201cthe most important role in my life,\u201d saying the film gave her space to explore emotions that parents often suppress, while Grint found unexpected parallels with his own life after discovering he was expecting his second child during filming. \u201cIt all felt kind of very meta,\u201d he laughs, admitting that <em>Nightborn<\/em> tapped into the strange reality that newborns can already seem alien enough without any supernatural help.<\/p>\n<p>For Bergholm, whose acclaimed debut <em>Hatching<\/em> also blended motherhood with creature horror, <em>Nightborn<\/em> grew out of conversations that many parents never feel comfortable having. \u201cIt started partly from my own experience,\u201d she explains, recalling the exhaustion and emotional confusion that followed childbirth. \u201cI started to wonder, \u2018What if your body breaks during childbirth? And how do you face your new body? And how do you face that child who you might kind of deep in your mind think that that child has broken me?\u2019\u201d Folding those ideas into centuries-old Finnish mythology about trolls lurking in the forest gave the filmmaker a supernatural framework for emotions that are all too real.
