Charley Hull\u2019s brushes with major glory \u2013 she has five runner\u2011up finishes \u2013 have only intensified a widespread desire for the 30\u2011year\u2011old to break through the tape. Royal Lytham &amp; St Annes provides the latest opportunity for the flamboyant Englishwoman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Korda arrived in Lancashire with half her four major triumphs having come in 2026. Perhaps the Floridian can afford to be generous and she has endorsed Hull\u2019s prospects. \u201cShe\u2019s such a great personality,\u201d Korda said. \u201cIt would be great for her to do it on home soil, too. She\u2019s an amazing player. I enjoy playing with her. A year ago <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2025\/aug\/03\/charley-hull-major-wait-goes-on-pushes-miyu-yamashita-all-the-way-at-womens-open\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">she was pipped by Miyu Yamashita<\/a>. Hull finished a shot adrift of Korda, the champion, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2026\/jun\/07\/nelly-korda-wins-us-open-ahead-of-charley-hull-to-claim-second-consecutive-major\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">US Women\u2019s Open<\/a> last month. \u201cThat\u2019s sometimes how she goes,\u201d Korda said. \u201cIt\u2019s about putting yourself in that position. You can\u2019t control what others are doing, but she\u2019s doing something right to always be there and be relevant, to be in the hunt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cIt\u2019s like Sam Burns. He\u2019s been in the hunt a lot during major championships, hasn\u2019t got it done. Eventually he will. You can\u2019t get discouraged, it has to be encouraging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">History is in Hull\u2019s favour. The last time the Women\u2019s Open visited here, in 2018, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2018\/aug\/05\/golf-georgia-hall-wins-womens-british-open-first-major\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">England\u2019s Georgia Hall claimed her maiden major<\/a> victory. A scorched links will render this a wonderful test. Korda estimates she will employ her driver five times per round at most, instead adding a four-iron to her armoury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">This is also something of a trial run, with the men\u2019s Open due to make a long-awaited return in 2028.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Korda is more comfortable than ever at being the name on everyone\u2019s lips. Early in her career, the world No 1 struggled with fame and attention. Having parents who were professional tennis players, a brother who still competes in that domain and a sister who is also on the LPGA Tour has helped with her mindset. It\u2019s not just golf. It\u2019s not just like the travel. It\u2019s kind of a combination of everything people don\u2019t really see behind the scenes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cMy parents are people I go to all the time for advice. My sister, too. She has been at a lot of majors this year. Those are my people. I\u2019m so comfortable and vulnerable with them. Ko has taken inspiration from her fellow New Zealander <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2026\/jul\/19\/open-championship-final-round-ryan-fox-tommy-fleetwood-scottie-scheffler-rory-mcilroy-golf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Ryan Fox after his Open glory<\/a> at nearby Royal Birkdale. Fox became the fourth player from New Zealand to win a major title, reducing Ko to tears as she watched from the west coast of the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cHe\u2019s very humble and I would say he\u2019s your typical Kiwi guy that happens to be a freak athlete,\u201d Ko said. \u201cI went to work out and everywhere I went I was like: \u2018Please turn on the Open.\u2019 It ended up not working on the TV so I had my trainer turn it on my cellphone. I can\u2019t remember my workout at all because my whole focus was there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cI took an Uber ride back home. As soon as I got home he was on the 18th and when I saw that drive I was so relieved, but so excited, super pumped.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cI screamed when his winning putt went in. I closed the door and I screamed.
