The plan was <a href=\"https:\/\/pdfs.dadeschools.net\/Bdarch\/2026\/Bd061726\/agenda\/d67rev.pdf?_sp=a7fe62ec-de5f-4ade-aa88-3e6b1b37caf9.1785160655718\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">previously recommended<\/a> by the district&#8217;s Attendance Boundary Committee.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_mt\">Miami-Dade Florida schools that will close<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The schools to be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcmiami.com\/news\/local\/miami-dade-school-board-approves-closing-9-schools\/3822652\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">shuttered and\/or merged<\/a>\u00a0include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"gnt_ar_b_ul\">\n<li class=\"gnt_ar_b_ul_li\">Mandarin Lakes K-8 Academy, which will close.<\/li>\n<li class=\"gnt_ar_b_ul_li\">Robert Russa Moton Elementary, which will close.<\/li>\n<li class=\"gnt_ar_b_ul_li\">Parkway Elementary, which will close.<\/li>\n<li class=\"gnt_ar_b_ul_li\">Rainbow Park Elementary, which will close.<\/li>\n<li class=\"gnt_ar_b_ul_li\">Phillis Wheatley Elementary, which will close.<\/li>\n<li class=\"gnt_ar_b_ul_li\">Lenora B. Smith Elementary school, which will be combined with Georgia Jones-Ayers Middle, becoming a K-8 center.<\/li>\n<li class=\"gnt_ar_b_ul_li\">Miami Springs Middle, which will be combined with Miami Springs Senior to become a 6-12 school.<\/li>\n<li class=\"gnt_ar_b_ul_li\">Pine Villa Elementary School, which will\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.dadeschools.net\/cmnc\/new\/37772\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">be combined<\/a>\u00a0with Arthur &amp; Polly Mays Conservatory of the Arts in order to form a K-12 school.<\/li>\n<li class=\"gnt_ar_b_ul_li\">Richmond Heights Middle, which will be combined with BioTech at Richmond Heights 9-12 to form a 6-12 school.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_x__c gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/><a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a__rb\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s?k=back+to+school+supplies&amp;tag=localconnect-20\" data-v-afl=\"\" data-t-l=\"\u2691f:body nav - reviewed button|outbound links|buy now click|www.amazon.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\">Shop back-to-school supplies at Amazon<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Though most campuses of the merging schools neighbor one another, Miami Springs Middle and Miami Springs High are located around a mile and a half apart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;These schools serve some of the highest-poverty communities in Miami-Dade,&#8221; said Lissette Fernandez, co-founder of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.momsforlibros.org\/faq\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Moms for Libros<\/a>, during the meeting.<\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_x__c gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;The state has underfunded public schools to the point where this district is closing the schools that serve children who have the least,&#8221; she continued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The closures and consolidations come amid declining student enrollment \u2014 the Miami-Dade County School District had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/19gBpmOyUEXXQ1uS4uqPOCguxipxOce9b\/view\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">313,220 students enrolled<\/a>\u00a0at the start of the 2025-2026 school year, down around 13,000 from the start of the 2024-25 school year. It\u2019s a dip that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wlrn.org\/education\/2026-03-17\/unprecedented-drops-in-enrollment-in-miami-dade-schools-loom-over-budget\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">WLRN previously reported<\/a>\u00a0has been frequently attributed to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2023\/03\/28\/desantis-signs-floridas-biggest-school-voucher-program-expansion\/11556334002\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Florida\u2019s expanded voucher program<\/a>, which allowed for the rapid growth of charter and private schools. Miami-Dade County officials, however, said the drop is partially due to fewer immigrant families moving to South Florida.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_gl gnt_em__el\" href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/picture-gallery\/news\/2026\/06\/08\/florida-news-photos-today\/90464626007\/\" data-t-l=\"\u2691g:l|l|c|view gallery:inline promo\" aria-label=\"View Gallery - See Florida's news of the day through our best photos\" target=\"_blank\"><img class=\"gnt_em_gl_i\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-src=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2026\/07\/28\/PTAL\/91080329007-execution-protests-086.JPG?crop=4354,2449,x0,y0&amp;width=660&amp;height=372&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" data-gl-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2026\/07\/28\/PTAL\/91080329007-execution-protests-086.JPG?crop=4354,https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/2449,https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/x0,https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/y0&amp;width=1320&amp;height=744&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp 2x\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"372\"\/><svg class=\"gnt_em_gl_i_svg\"><use xlink:href=\"#gnt_svg_camera\"\/><\/svg><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_mt\">Florida public schools drops in student enrollment<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The five largest school districts in Florida by enrollment, including Miami-Dade and Broward,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/education\/2026\/05\/22\/where-enrollment-down-most-florida\/90192179007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">have collectively lost about 67,000 non-charter students<\/a>\u00a0from the 2023-2024 school year through the 2025-2026 school year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">That\u2019s according to figures compiled by the Lee County school district, provided in May as part of a discussion surrounding its \u201cbudget realignment.\u201d The numbers are as of February 2026, and refer to total membership for grades from PreK-12.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_anc\" id=\"gnt_atomsnc\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"loadAnc\" aria-label=\"Newsletter signup form\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">From 2023-2024 to 2024-2025, Miami-Dade Public Schools lost 6,947 non-charter students and gained 1,331 charter students. From 2024-2025 to 2025-2026, the district lost 15,288 non-charter students and gained 428 charter students. In February, the district had 232,617 non-charter students enrolled for the 2025-2026 year, along with 86,802 charter students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">In Broward, meanwhile, the district lost 9,512 non-charter students from 2023-2024 to 2024-2025 and gained 68 charter school students. From 2024-2025 to 2025-2026, the district lost 6,955 non-charter students and 1,328 charter students. The district had 185,864 non-charter students enrolled at the start of the 2025-2026 year, as well as 48,460 charter students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Collectively, the Broward and Miami-Dade school districts lost 38,702 non-charter students from 2023-2024 through 2025-2026.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_cp gnt_em_cp__sp\" aria-label=\"Latest South Florida trending news\" data-c-cta=\"TOP HEADLINES\">\n<div class=\"gnt_em_cp_cw\"><img class=\"gnt_em_cp_cw_i\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-src=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2026\/07\/24\/USAT\/91037977007-florida-mole-skink-on-leaf.jpg?crop=1422,1066,x640,y0&amp;width=258&amp;height=193&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" data-gl-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2026\/07\/24\/USAT\/91037977007-florida-mole-skink-on-leaf.jpg?crop=1422,https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/1066,https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/x640,https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/y0&amp;width=516&amp;height=386&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp 2x\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\"\/><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_mt\">When does school start again in South Florida?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.browardschools.com\/calendar-e3\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Broward<\/a>: Classes start on August 10 and end on May 28<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><a href=\"https:\/\/api.dadeschools.net\/WMSFiles\/392\/calendars\/25-26\/School-Calendars-2026-2027-Elementary.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Miami-Dade<\/a>: Classes start on August 13 and end on June 3.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.keysschools.com\/documents\/our-district\/school-board\/school-year-calendars\/821508\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Monroe<\/a>: Classes start on August 12 and end on May 28.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.palmbeachschools.org\/calendar\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Palm Beach County<\/a>: Classes start on August 10 and end on May 27.<\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_x__c gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_mt\">Broward County is also considering more than 10 school closures for 2027-2028 academic year<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">At a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9BkFg5hKXP0\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">May 12 school board workshop<\/a>, Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn said the Broward School District could close more than 10 schools in the 2027-2028 academic year in response to a question by board member Dr. Allen Zeman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cIf what we are trying to do is to create the most efficient and effective school district possible, what, in general, would be the number of schools you&#8217;d look to repurpose through this cycle?\u201d Zeman asked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Closures are part of an ongoing effort to shutter, amalgamate or repurpose campuses throughout the district in response to a precipitous decline in enrollment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cYou always got the hard questions, huh, Doc?\u201d Hepburn said, adding, \u201cI don\u2019t want to scare the public, but I would say definitely above 10.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">No specific schools were mentioned.
