On Doctor Who, her character was one of many that the Doctor met as he passed through time in Joy To The World, and was trying to decide whether to send a letter to a lost lover.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">She will act opposite Shetland star Gemma Laurie. Laurie played Rosemary Strachan, one of the Scottish show&#8217;s killers, and Wilma McCann in ITV&#8217;s The Long Shadow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Smith and Gatwa aren&#8217;t the only Doctor Who alums to be involved with the film. Becky Rossmaur, who worked in the casting department, served as casting director for the short.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In a statement about the film, Gatwa said: \u201cI had the pleasure of working with N\u00edamh on Doctor Who and was blown away by her talent and insight. It\u2019s really simple and beautifully layered at the same time and as soon as I read it my heart was warmed and I knew I wanted to be involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Gatwa ended his tenure as the Doctor at the end of his second season. The final scene showed his Doctor regenerating into Billie Piper, but with the Christmas special cancelled and the show now out to tender, fans are unsure if this storyline has been quietly dropped.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Speaking to <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/fashion\/people\/ncuti-gatwa-interview\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">The Telegraph<\/a> about leaving Doctor Who, Gatwa said: &#8220;I was tired and burnt out at the end of [season 2]. It was exhausting. But it was a magical time, magical. There was never an opportunity to recoup the energy \u2013 it\u2019s just go, go, go.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He shared that he &#8220;found it hard being away from home and family&#8221;, especially as he was spending seven days a week filming for eight months, after five years of on and off filming in Cardiff for Sex Education. He added: \u201cI had to wrestle with myself \u2013 I fell in love with that show. I\u2019ll miss it, but I was ready to move on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\"><em>Like this story?
