Sen. Ed Markey is 80, and he\u2019s been in Congress for 50 years. But he\u2019s been a stalwart ally of progressives; he was, for instance, the main Senate champion of the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbonbrief.org\/ocasio-cortez-markey-to-unveil-green-new-deal-bill-as-soon-as-next-week\">Green New Deal<\/a>.\u201d And the leaders of the Democrats\u2019 left flank, like Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcvb.com\/article\/sen-ed-markey-airs-new-ad-with-top-democrats-backing-his-campaign\/73200444\">swinging into action<\/a> to try and defend him. \u201cIt\u2019s not your age, it\u2019s the age of your ideas. And in this race, I\u2019m the youngest guy,\u201d Markey <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2026\/07\/26\/politics\/massachusetts-democratic-senate-primary-moulton-markey\">has said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">His opponent, Seth Moulton, a 47-year-old Marine Corps veteran, also goes against type. While \u201cmoderate\u201d and \u201cestablishment\u201d often are treated as synonyms, Moulton has a history of pushing back against both progressive activists and older Democratic leaders. In his current run, he\u2019s made generational change his main issue, including some blunt warnings about Markey\u2019s age.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">\u201cIf Democrats win the Senate, it will almost certainly be by one vote, and we can\u2019t afford to lose that vote due to a medical absence or emergency,\u201d Moulton told me in an interview. \u201cThat\u2019s not ageism, that\u2019s just actuarial tables.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--block-placement _13j8zv42 _13j8zv40 duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<div class=\"duet--article--highlight _10sa9oml _1a70pe0\">\n<div class=\"_1a70pe6\">\n<ul class=\"duet--article--unordered-list _10sa9omi uyby7v0 pn04iq1 _1a70pe7\">\n<li class=\"uyby7v1\"><span class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\">In the primary where Sen. Ed Markey is being challenged by Rep. Seth Moulton, Markey is championing his progressive credentials, but Moulton is running as the candidate of generational change.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"uyby7v1\"><span class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\">This differs from other hotly contested primaries in that Democrats\u2019 left faction is rallying to keep 80-year-old Markey in power for another term, while the less solidly progressive Moulton is taking on Democratic leaders.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"uyby7v1\"><span class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\">The outcome will reveal whether Democratic primary voters are more fired up about progressive ideology, or whether they\u2019re ready to toss out older incumbents of any ideological stripe.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">But his Senate campaign isn\u2019t the first time he\u2019s taken on Democratic leaders. In 2018, he led a (failed) effort <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/magazine\/story\/2018\/11\/26\/speaker-nancy-pelosi-revolt-seth-moulton-222686\/\">to stop Nancy Pelosi<\/a> from becoming speaker again, arguing again that the aging House leadership needed to clear a path for younger members. In 2024, he became one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbur.org\/news\/2024\/07\/04\/moulton-says-biden-drop-out-election\">first prominent Democrats to bail<\/a> on President Joe Biden after his disastrous debate, saying the president needed to \u201clet new leaders rise up.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">The party establishment, Moulton told me, has \u201cfailed to be honest with the American people about the challenges we face.\u201d He cited Democrats denying there was \u201can immigration problem at the southern border under Biden,\u201d their insistence that Biden-era inflation was \u201ctransitory,\u201d and their initial defense of Biden after the debate exposed his frailty.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">Some of his criticisms of the party have rankled progressives. After President Donald Trump\u2019s victory in 2024, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/16\/us\/politics\/democrats-transgender-rights-moulton.html\">publicly criticized<\/a> Democrats\u2019 stance on trans athletes in stark terms, telling the New York Times he didn\u2019t want his \u201ctwo little girls\u201d getting \u201crun over on a playing field by a male or formerly male athlete\u201d \u2014 a statement that earned him <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/boston\/news\/seth-moulton-trans-athletes-democrats\/\">intense backlash in Massachusetts.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">Now facing a Democratic primary electorate in a very liberal state, Moulton has tried to avoid being pigeonholed as a centrist. For instance, he <a href=\"https:\/\/sethmoulton.com\/moulton-calls-to-abolish-prosecute-ice\/\">said he supports<\/a> abolishing ICE and prosecuting many of its officials, and he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.notus.org\/campaigns\/seth-moulton-democrats-ed-markey-trans-rights-2026-election-massachusetts\">said he supports<\/a> legislation like the Transgender Bill of Rights. Asked about his comments on transgender youth, he told me his intention \u201cwas not to hurt or offend anybody, but to say that we need to be willing to have these tough conversations as Democrats \u2014 and not simply cede this territory to Republicans.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--block-placement _13j8zv41 _13j8zv40 duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<div argument has been that Markey should pass the torch \u2014 and that frustrations with what congressional Democrats\u2019 ineffectiveness should in part be aimed at Markey.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">\u201cOne of the first votes I\u2019ll take in the Senate will be against Chuck Schumer for leader,\u201d Moulton said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">Markey, for his part, has accused Moulton of throwing trans kids \u201cunder the bus\u201d and argued his own long record and support for causes from climate to Medicare-for-all shows him to be a reliable progressive ally.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">\u201cCongressman Moulton is trying to walk a political tightrope,\u201d Markey campaign manager Cam Charbonnier told Vox. \u201cHe\u2019s working to appeal to moderate voters, but that coalition alone isn\u2019t enough to win a Massachusetts Democratic primary. So, he\u2019s also trying to appeal to progressives, but he doesn\u2019t have the track record to back that up. The result is a campaign that\u2019s trying to be everything to everyone, leaving voters questioning what he actually stands for.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">Polling in the race has been sparse, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/polls\/massachusetts-us-senate-election-polls-2026.html\">the last two public surveys<\/a> both showed a surprisingly close race ; Markey led by just 5 points in one and 6 in the other. However, there were many undecided voters, and we\u2019ll soon see whether ad campaigns \u2014 like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edmarkey.com\/warren-pressley-sanders-unite-behind-ed-markey-in-new-statewide-ad-buy\/\">Markey\u2019s new one<\/a> featuring Sanders, Warren, and Rep. Ayanna Pressley \u2014 shift the numbers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">If Moulton wins the September 1 primary, or even comes close, it would suggest that the Democratic base\u2019s frustrations with gerontocracy and Washington are more than stand-ins for a debate over ideology and reflect broader concerns about older politicians <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/podcasts\/496717\/clyburn-gerontocracy-primaries-voters\">losing touch<\/a>, being ineffective, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/podcasts\/495494\/mitch-mcconnell-proof-life-conspiracy\">aging<\/a>, and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/david-scott-119th-congress-deaths\/\">dying<\/a> in office.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">But if Markey ends up sailing to victory, it would send a message that it can be perilous for upstart Democratic challengers like Moulton to break with the progressive base \u2014 and that validation from the Sanders wing of the party can be a very valuable thing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p><h2 class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\">Sen. Ed Markey beat back a previous primary challenge by mobilizing progressives<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">Though Markey entered the House of Representatives 50 years ago, his team argued that his record shows he was frequently on the right side of history \u2014 that, for instance, he started focusing on climate change as far back as the 1980s and that he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markey.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/markey-hails-scotus-doma-defeat-return-of-marriage-equality-in-california\">supported same-sex marriage<\/a> in the 1990s. (Moulton bristled at this a bit, telling me, \u201cHe was elected as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonmagazine.com\/news\/2013\/02\/28\/ed-markeys-anti-abortion-past\/\">pro-life Democrat<\/a> who was <a href=\"https:\/\/commonwealthbeacon.org\/politics\/liss-riordan-attacks-markey-on-1970s-stand-on-busing\/\">opposed to<\/a> the racial integration of Boston schools.\u201d)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">In 2009, he and Rep. Henry Waxman co-authored Democrats\u2019 sweeping \u201ccap-and-trade\u201d climate bill, which was one of President Barack Obama\u2019s top priorities. John Kerry joined Obama\u2019s Cabinet as secretary of state, Markey ran for his open Senate seat. He was the more progressive candidate in a primary against Rep. Stephen Lynch, which he won by 15 percentage points.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">But toward the end of Markey\u2019s first full Senate term, an ambitious Democrat with a famous name \u2014 then-Rep. Joe Kennedy III, grandson of RFK (and nephew of RFK Jr.) \u2014 launched a primary bid against him, also with a message of generational change.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">Markey\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umass.edu\/news\/article\/new-umass-amherst-polls-show-biden-early\">initial<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/commonwealthbeacon.org\/politics\/kennedy-holds-17-point-lead-over-markey-in-poll\/\">polling<\/a> was quite weak, he still wasn\u2019t very well-known in the state, and he appeared to be in serious danger. But, unexpectedly, he became an online phenomenon of sorts, as young progressives, impressed by his Senate push for the Green New Deal and early endorsement from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2019\/09\/13\/ocasio-cortez-endorses-markey-massachusetts-1495648\">Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez<\/a> (who has not weighed in this time), rallied to his side. His campaign\u2019s message that he was a movement champion proved successful, and he ended up winning the primary by 11 points.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">When Democrats had a trifecta in Washington again under President Joe Biden, they passed their climate bill. The new law, the Inflation Reduction Act, established the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, a \u201cgreen bank\u201d of sorts. The concept, in various iterations, had been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eenews.net\/articles\/green-groups-lining-up-behind-markey-in-primary-challenge\/\">one of Markey\u2019s main causes<\/a> over the years, and its enactment was a major achievement. Yet, that success was short-lived, as the Trump administration is now attempting to dismantle the program.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p><h2 class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\">Rep. Seth Moulton has been a thorn in the Democratic establishment\u2019s side<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">Moulton, for his part, believes he can take down Markey, because he took down a long-time Democratic incumbent once before; that\u2019s how he got his start in politics.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">Rep. John Tierney had represented his northeastern Massachusetts district for nearly two decades, when Moulton challenged him in a 2014 primary. A longtime ally of Nancy Pelosi, Tierney <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2012\/07\/tierney-scrambles-to-save-house-career-079097\">became vulnerable<\/a> due to a gambling scandal involving his family. (His wife\u2019s brother was accused of racketeering for operating an illegal offshore casino, and Tierney\u2019s wife was accused of preparing false tax returns. Both were convicted and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/01\/14\/us\/politics\/14brfs-WIFEOFCONGRE_BRF.html\">sent to prison<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">In contrast, the 35-year-old Moulton was a fresh face \u2014 a Harvard grad and a decorated combat veteran who had served four Marine Corps tours in Iraq. He proved an effective fundraiser and campaigner, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbur.org\/news\/2014\/09\/09\/in-stunning-defeat-incumbent-u-s-rep-tierney-loses-to-newcomer-moulton\">upsetting Tierney<\/a> by 10 percentage points.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--block-placement _13j8zv41 _13j8zv40 duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<div style=\"position:relative\">\n<div After Democrats\u2019 2016 defeat, he became one of the party\u2019s most outspoken critics of Pelosi. Already, by 2017, there was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/magazine\/story\/2017\/07\/28\/seth-moulton-congressman-run-president-2020-profile-215428\/\">talk he might run for president<\/a> \u2014 and ample anonymous quotes from other Democrats disparaging him as opportunistic, grasping, and disloyal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">Moulton insisted throughout that he was making a case that went beyond personal ambition. Before the 2018 midterms, he started the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/lissandravilla\/seth-moulton-is-building-a-political-army-but-hes-not-sure\">Serve America PAC<\/a> to try and elect more members with military or national service backgrounds who were skeptical of Democratic leaders \u2014 more people like him \u2014 to Congress. But when Democrats retook the House majority, Moulton\u2019s high-profile effort to supplant Pelosi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/magazine\/story\/2018\/11\/26\/speaker-nancy-pelosi-revolt-seth-moulton-222686\/\">flamed out<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">So did his subsequent presidential bid. He was in the race for four months in 2019 but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/seth-moulton-drops-out-of-presidential-race-today-2019-08-23\/\">dropped out<\/a> when he failed to qualify for debates, warning Democrats on his way out against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/08\/23\/us\/politics\/seth-moulton-2020-drop-out.html\">\u201cveering too far left\u201d<\/a> in their choice of candidate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">But the latest round of Democratic failures \u2014 Biden\u2019s debate face-plant and Kamala Harris\u2019 defeat \u2014 spurred Moulton to make another attempt at higher office.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">\u201cSomeone who has been in Congress for half a century and will be 86 years old at the end of his next term is, in fact, too old,\u201d Moulton <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2025\/10\/15\/moulton-markey-age-senate-midterms\/\">told the Washington Post<\/a> after launching his campaign last October. \u201cIf we haven\u2019t learned the lessons of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Dianne Feinstein and Joe Biden\u2026then where are we going as a party?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p><h2 class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\">Is this a race about who\u2019s the best progressive, or about who wants to shake up the way things are done?<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">In addition to the close polling in recent months, <a href=\"https:\/\/sethmoulton.com\/release-moulton-out-raises-49-year-incumbent-for-second-consecutive-quarter\/\">Moulton\u2019s fundraising has been impressive<\/a> \u2014 aided, Markey\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonwealthtogetherpac.com\/news\/consistent-ad?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">allies argued<\/a>, by donors associated with private equity and crypto. (A pro-Markey Super PAC has <a href=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/cgi-bin\/forms\/C00933564\/1994790\/sa\/ALL\">fundraised<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/cgi-bin\/forms\/C00933564\/1964475\/sa\/ALL\">heavily<\/a> from unions, as well as some investors and corporate executives.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">But when Markey and Moulton <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wgbh.org\/news\/politics\/2026-07-08\/first-u-s-senate-debate-between-markey-and-moulton-here-are-five-takeaways\">faced off on the debate stage<\/a> earlier this month, nothing even close to the Joe Biden catastrophe ensued. Markey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marbleheadindependent.com\/in-first-democratic-primary-debate-markey-and-moulton-measure-power-differently\/\">insisted<\/a> he\u2019d never been more energized, and both candidates hit their preferred messaging points. For Markey, that meant portraying himself as a dependable progressive and Moulton as an unreliable ally.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">\u201cAfter the 2024 election, Congressman Moulton decided that he was gonna throw trans kids under the bus \u2014 the political bus \u2014 and blame them for the loss of the 2024 election.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RD-TaA5wh6o\">Markey said<\/a>. \u201cThose kids are vulnerable.
