They&#8217;re increasingly convinced the country&#8217;s biggest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/07\/14\/american-low-confidence-institutions-poll\" target=\"_blank\">institutions<\/a> aren&#8217;t working for them.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><strong>By the numbers:<\/strong> 33% of Americans approve of the Supreme Court&#8217;s performance, according to a Gallup <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/713096\/supreme-court-job-approval-slumps-record-low.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">survey<\/a> of 1,200 adults conducted from July 1-19 \u2014\u00a0days after the justices wrapped their latest term.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>That&#8217;s down 6 percentage points from 2025, the court&#8217;s previous low.<\/li>\n<li>About 13.5% of Americans approve of Congress&#8217; performance, down from 23.2% in July 2025, per YouGov <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.com\/en-us\/trackers\/us-congress-approval-rating?period=5yrs\" target=\"_blank\">data<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Trump&#8217;s approval rating stands at 34%, the lowest of either of his terms in office, a The Economist \/ YouGov poll <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.com\/en-us\/articles\/52920-economist-yougov-tracking-trump#views-on-members-of-congress\" target=\"_blank\">found<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>Data: <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/713096\/supreme-court-job-approval-slumps-record-low.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Gallup<\/a>; Chart: Noah Bressner\/Axios<\/div>\n<p><strong>Zoom in: <\/strong>Republicans drove much of the Supreme Court&#8217;s slide.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Just 58% of Republicans approve of the court this year, down from a near-record 79% in 2025.<\/li>\n<li>Gallup estimates those changes may reflect frustration that the court has bucked Trump on several major priorities, including birthright citizenship and tariffs.<\/li>\n<li>Meanwhile, Democratic support plunged after the court overturned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/05\/14\/abortion-access-telehealth-shield-laws-roe-v-wade\" target=\"_blank\">Roe v. Wade<\/a>, and Gallup suggests Democrats and independents remain unhappy with its conservative tilt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Flashback: <\/strong>When Gallup first asked the question in 2000, 62% of Americans approved of the Supreme Court, and a majority continued to support the court through 2010.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Since then, its ratings have mostly fluctuated in the 40s as political polarization increased.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Zoom out:<\/strong> The low rankings square with Americans&#8217; overall <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/07\/14\/american-low-confidence-institutions-poll\" target=\"_blank\">low confidence<\/a> in 14 of the nation&#8217;s core institutions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An average of just 27% of Americans say they have &#8220;a great deal&#8221; or &#8220;quite a lot&#8221; of confidence in 14 major U.S. institutions \u2014 only one point above the record low set in 2023.<\/li>\n<li>There&#8217;s a wide partisan split here, too.
