{"id":20793,"date":"2026-07-29T09:18:49","date_gmt":"2026-07-29T04:18:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=20793"},"modified":"2026-07-29T09:18:49","modified_gmt":"2026-07-29T04:18:49","slug":"sean-astin-was-paid-so-little-for-the-lord-of-the-rings-that-he-had-to-sell-his-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=20793","title":{"rendered":"Sean Astin was paid so little for \u2018The Lord Of The Rings\u2019 that he had to sell his house"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Sean Astin has revealed that his salary for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/films\/lord-of-the-rings\"><i>The Lord Of The Rings<\/i><\/a>\u00a0trilogy was so low that he was forced to sell his house.<\/p>\n<p>The actor played Samwise Gamgee in Peter Jackson\u2019s three films, which were released between 2001 and 2003 and shot back-to-back in New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the trilogy going on to gross\u00a0almost $3billion (\u00a32.2billion) worldwide, Astin has said there was a significant \u201cdisconnect\u201d between the attention he received and his financial situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was not prepared for that level of visibility and access,\u201d he told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2026\/jul\/27\/sean-astin-interview-samwise-gamgee-lotr-child-stardom-stranger-things\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>The Guardian<\/i><\/a>.\u00a0\u201cAnd there was a disconnect between the attention that I was getting and how much money we had. It was not a lot of money! In fact, I had to sell my house because I negotiated such a small amount on the trilogy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Astin added that he is \u201cvery comfortable financially now\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The actor has previously said he was offered $250,000 (\u00a3190,000) for approximately 18 months of work on the trilogy, with no residual payments included in his deal.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lord of the rings two towers sam&amp;apos;s speech\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/A_u9Hc0Yg1o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the\u00a0<i>Jim &amp; Sam Show<\/i>\u00a0in 2017, Astin explained that he had already committed to annual property expenses of approximately $250,000 when he accepted the role.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy pen signed this contract which obligated me to $250,000 a year, and I\u2019m\u00a0gonna\u00a0sign this contract which will make it so that I absolutely cannot satisfy that other thing,\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n<p>Astin is not the only member of the cast to have discussed the\u00a0relatively modest\u00a0salaries paid for the fantasy trilogy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/elijah-wood\">Elijah Wood<\/a>, who played Frodo Baggins, said last year that filming all three movies without an opportunity to renegotiate meant it was not \u201cthe sort of lucrative scenario that you could sort of rest easy for the rest of your life\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/cate-blanchett\">Cate Blanchett<\/a>, who played Galadriel, previously joked that she was\u00a0essentially paid\u00a0in \u201cfree sandwiches\u201d,\u00a0while\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/orlando-bloom\">Orlando Bloom<\/a>\u00a0said he received $175,000 (\u00a3131,000) for playing Legolas across all three films.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing, nothing, nothing.
