The company has now issued a statement attributing the disruption to an IT issue.<\/p>\n<p>The ground stop was issued at <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2026\/07\/28\/us\/american-airlines-flights-halted\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">approximately 6:30 p.m. ET \/ 3:30 p.m. PT<\/a>, and appears to have impacted all American Airlines flights within the U.S. at the time. The company has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planespotters.net\/airline\/American-Airlines\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">over 1000 planes<\/a> in its fleet, and is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oag.com\/blog\/biggest-airlines-in-the-us\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">biggest airline in the U.S. by capacity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, the issue was quickly resolved, with American Airlines stating that flights had resumed less than an hour after the ground stop began. We put a temporary ground stop in place while our teams worked to resolve the issue. As of writing, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/nasstatus.faa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">multiple ground stops at airports across the U.S.<\/a> due to thunderstorms.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, a nationwide ground stop is less common.
