It might be loading or has been removed.<br \/>\n    <\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>What is T-Satellite?<\/h2>\n<p>Way back in 2022, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and T-Mobile <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/spacex-t-mobile-satellite-phone\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\"><u>announced<\/u><\/a> an exclusive partnership between the two companies that would allow T-Mobile customers to connect to Starlink satellites. T-Mobile finally launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/t-mobile-officially-launches-starlink-satellite-service-july\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\"><u>T-Satellite<\/u><\/a>\u00a0service for customers last summer, following a <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/apple-iphone-spacex-starlink-t-mobile\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\"><u>testing period<\/u><\/a> at the start of the year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;T-Satellite connects you where towers can\u2019t,&#8221; reads T-Mobile&#8217;s T-Satellite with Starlink <a href=\"https:\/\/www.t-mobile.com\/coverage\/satellite-phone-service?gclsrc=aw.ds&amp;&amp;cmpid=MGPO_PB_P_25SATDLCH_1733093272988_197070814309_782318489193&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=23933067581&amp;gbraid=0AAAAAD79WuVjAg3e971av_WglDNQqt7s2&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwpqHTBhAcEiwAj2Afuuae8DtgndFc7eJlN1AABDr7FjoydAFQPJBUzBU4gnMSA_s_C8VN1RoCCVYQAvD_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\"><u>product page<\/u><\/a> on its website.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent earnings call last Thursday, just days before the outage, T-Mobile CEO Srini Gopalan even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/news\/t-mobile-ceo-looks-beyond-starlink-for-cellular-satellite-service\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\"><u>shared<\/u><\/a> that satellite service won&#8217;t so much compete with traditional mobile carrier offerings, but be offered as complementary alongside cellular service.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, when cellular service went down on Monday, some users reported online that they struggled to connect to T-Satellite.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitterEmbed twitter-tweet\"><p>\n    <a class=\"text-gray-600\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Defiantclient2\/status\/2081878638451204384\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab) (opens in a new window)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n        This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.<br \/>\n    <\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One crucial issue users may have faced: <strong>Starlink connectivity <a href=\"https:\/\/starlink.com\/support\/article\/2ae8f1d0-b09a-28fa-4b21-8dbe678dff62?srsltid=AfmBOoqzASomWrhJLOGK7j_GCs6q-9afkyn5I-w58rr5D6lhknql-LfL\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">requires a wide, clear view of the open sky<\/a><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> So, while Starlink connections may be available in most urban areas, objects such as roofs, poles, and even trees can obstruct signal strength. This could explain why some customers struggled to connect via satellite while their phones were stuck in SOS Mode during the T-Mobile outage.<\/p>\n<p>Mashable did <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/bankster\/status\/2081855823282667805\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">come across users on X<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/tmobile\/comments\/1v8bw52\/t_mobile_outage\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">Reddit<\/a> who said they successfully connected to T-Satellite during the Monday outage.<\/p>\n<p>T-Mobile&#8217;s T-Satellite with Starlink service is included at no extra cost on certain T-Mobile plans, such as the $100 per month Experience Beyond plan. If T-Satellite isn&#8217;t included in a user&#8217;s service plan, they can add it on for $10 per month.<\/p>\n<h2>Starlink&#8217;s partnership with T-Mobile hasn&#8217;t met expectations<\/h2>\n<p>Recent statements from T-Mobile CEO Gopalan suggest T-Satellite hasn&#8217;t been widely used by T-Mobile customers.<\/p>\n<p>During an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/news\/t-mobile-ceo-cellular-starlink-usage-lower-than-expected\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\"><u>April 2026 earnings call<\/u><\/a>, Gopalan called the company&#8217;s Starlink partnership &#8220;very strong&#8221; but admitted that T-Mobile was &#8220;seeing a lot less usage than we were originally thinking&#8221; regarding its T-Satellite service. Gopalan went on to call it &#8220;a great complementary product.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At a conference the next month, in May 2026, Gopalan was more specific with just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/news\/t-mobile-ceo-pretty-much-no-one-buys-satellite-standalone\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\"><u>how low T-Satellite usage<\/u><\/a> has been.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust to give you an example, we look at our data in May, and satellite usage is 0.0002% of our total network usage,&#8221; Gopalan said of its T-Satellite service. &#8220;That\u2019s three zeros.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the previously mentioned earnings call from last week, Gopalan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/news\/t-mobile-ceo-looks-beyond-starlink-for-cellular-satellite-service\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\"><u>reiterated<\/u><\/a> those numbers and added that \u201cin our busiest summer months, that went to 0.0003%.&#8221; And, despite that small summer bump, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ookla.com\/articles\/measuring-the-direct-to-device-d2d-marketplace-2026\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\"><u>independent data<\/u><\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/Speedtest.net\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">Speedtest.net<\/a> parent company Ookla found that T-Satellite usage has largely gone down.<\/p>\n<p>During its launch last year, T-Mobile shared that 1.8 million customers had signed up for the T-Satellite free beta period. The company has not shared subscription numbers for the Starlink service since.<\/p>\n<p>Mashable reached out to T-Mobile to find out more about T-Satellite service and Monday&#8217;s nationwide outage.
