{"id":20496,"date":"2026-07-29T02:35:43","date_gmt":"2026-07-28T21:35:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=20496"},"modified":"2026-07-29T02:35:43","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T21:35:43","slug":"rappers-with-streets-named-after-them","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=20496","title":{"rendered":"Rappers With Streets Named After Them"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>As legendary rappers\u00a0continue to\u00a0be honored\u00a0with accolades like being inducted into\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xxlmag.com\/rappers-in-the-rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,<\/a> the same can be said about rappers having streets named after them.<\/p>\n<p>It all started\u00a0with <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.nytimes.com\/cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com\/2009\/06\/30\/queens-street-corner-will-be-named-for-run-dmc\/\" target=\"_blank\">Run-DMC in their hometown of Queens, N.Y., back in 2009.<\/a>\u00a0The corner of 205th Street and Hollis Avenue in Hollis, Queens, was renamed Run-DMC JMJ Way\u00a0in honor of the group&#8217;s late DJ Jam Master Jay. Ever since then,\u00a0street names have become one of the\u00a0most\u00a0cherished ways for a hometown to honor its homegrown talent.<\/p>\n<p>Other rappers who have passed away have been honored as well.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.xxlmag.com\/tags\/the-notorious-big\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Notorious B.I.G.<\/a>\u00a0received a street named after him in Brooklyn. In 2019,\u00a0the corner of Fulton Street and St. James Place was renamed Christopher Wallace Way in celebration of the late rap legend.\u00a0More specifically, there have been streets renamed in support of Hip Hop 50. Most recently,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.xxlmag.com\/tags\/tupac-shakur\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tupac Shakur<\/a>\u00a0received a street with his name. Tupac Shakur Way is now in Oakland, Calif., which was done in November of 2023. The sign arrived 27 years after his death.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s a moment that I know my brother would be proud of,&#8221; said Tupac\u2019s sister, Sekyiwa \u201cSet\u201d Shakur, at the ceremony. &#8220;Establishing love and peace in the Oakland community especially mattered to him. Being able to represent safety to his people mattered to him&#8230;Let his spirit live on the rest of these years in these streets and in your hearts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Many of the street signs dedicated to some of your favorite rappers have been initiated due to the hard work of LeRoy McCarthy and his company\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/heterodoxxinc\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">HeteroDoxX Inc.<\/a> Starting in 2013 with the unsuccessful proposal to co-name\u00a0St. James Place and Fulton Street Christopher Wallace Way, McCarthy&#8217;s diligence has led to rappers including Tupac Shakur, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xxlmag.com\/tags\/wu-tang-clan\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wu-Tang Clan<\/a>, Biggie, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xxlmag.com\/tags\/phife-dawg\/\" target=\"_blank\">Phife Dawg<\/a>\u00a0and others getting roads named after them.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a great look in America\u00a0for hip-hop art and culture to have the same respect as other American music creations: blues, country, jazz, rock &amp; roll, etc. have received over the decades, including a Hip Hop Resolution in the U.S. Senate,&#8221; McCarthy tells <em>XXL<\/em>. &#8220;I am proud that my company HeteroDoxX Inc. initiated for this momentum to happen, in NYC, at Capitol Hill, and across America, starting in 2013 with Christopher &#8216;Notorious B.I.G.&#8217; Wallace Way in Brooklyn, N.Y., through to the 2023 dedication of Tupac Shakur Way in Oakland, Calif.<\/p>\n<p>Since rappers\u00a0advocate for\u00a0their hometown so strongly, being\u00a0bestowed with their own street name remains one of the highest honors.
