The ABC phenomenon changed not only what audiences expected from television, but also redefined the very concept of small-screen success. Many ambitious shows aimed to grip the culture zeitgeist as fiercely as the Oceanic Flight 815 survivors, but few pursued it more openly than HBO&#8217;s <em>Westworld<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>    <!-- No AdsNinja v10 Client! --><!-- No AdsNinja v10 Client! --><\/p>\n<p>Westworld remains perhaps the most notorious example of a mystery-box sci-fi series that made no secret of trying to follow in Lost&#8217;s footsteps. It was nowhere near as successful as its predecessor, but it developed a strong fandom of its own and delivered several seasons of ambitious sci-fi. Those who enjoyed <em>Westworld<\/em> should definitely check out another series that was also trying to reach <em>Lost<\/em>&#8216;s heights: <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/db\/tv-show\/terra-nova\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Terra Nova<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, a <em>Lost<\/em>-like mystery box that traded <em>Westworld<\/em>\u2019s robots for a very different kind of sci-fi spectacle.<\/p>\n<p>Premiering in 2011, Fox\u2019s <em>Terra Nova<\/em> followed the Shannon family, led by Jim Shannon (Jason O&#8217;Mara), as they travel from a dystopian future to a prehistoric version of Earth. Steven Spielberg was among the show&#8217;s executive producers, and its scale was almost unheard of for broadcast TV at the time. The series is filled with dinosaurs and other prehistoric life, and Steven Spielberg&#8217;s involvement as an executive producer only strengthens its connection to his iconic dinosaur franchise. In many ways, <em>Terra Nova<\/em> could almost be the live-action <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/jurassic-world-camp-cretaceous-netflix-shared-universe\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Jurassic Park<\/em> TV series many fans have always wanted<\/a>, even though its story ultimately takes the concept in a very different direction.<\/p>\n<p>Where things become particularly interesting is in how <em>Terra Nova<\/em> takes the dinosaur-focused spectacle of the <em>Jurassic Park<\/em> and <em>Jurassic World<\/em> movies and applies it to themes that will feel familiar to <em>Westworld<\/em> viewers. Rather than bringing dinosaurs into the present day, <em>Terra Nova<\/em> places its characters inside an isolated habitat, the titular settlement populated by time travelers. The sense of detachment from the real world inherent in <em>Westworld<\/em>\u2019s park setting is transplanted to <em>Terra Nova<\/em>\u2019s sprawling prehistoric colony, creating a similarly contained environment where competing interests can collide.<\/p>\n<p> <em>Terra Nova<\/em> and <em>Westworld<\/em> also both explore themes like corporate oversight, leadership power struggles, and ideological clashes over humanity&#8217;s future. In <em>Westworld<\/em>, the corporation controlling the park and the creators of the technology that makes it possible have wildly different visions for how it should be used to steer the path of mankind. <em>Terra Nova<\/em> explores similar ideas but instead uses its colony and its connection to the future to examine them. Both shows were, at different points, tipped as <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/mystery-tv-shows-almost-next-lost\/\" target=\"_blank\">potential successors to <em>Lost<\/em><\/a>, and both were ultimately cancelled far earlier than their creators intended. For <em>Terra Nova<\/em>, the biggest problem was its enormous production cost. The series required extensive visual effects, and large-scale sets, and is still known for being one of the expensive shows of the broadcast era.<\/p>\n<p>Still, at least <em>Westworld<\/em> managed to run for multiple seasons. The cancellation of <em>Terra Nova<\/em> was announced after its first, with financial concerns playing a major role in Fox&#8217;s decision. That makes <em>Terra Nova<\/em>&#8216;s fate particularly frustrating in retrospect because its ambitions might have been better suited to the current streaming landscape. Today, hugely ambitious sci-fi series with monstrous budgets are far more common. That matters, because <em>Terra Nova<\/em> arrived at a time when every show had essentially one chance to deliver the necessary audience. <\/p>\n<p>Streaming has changed that equation. A show can build an audience over time, benefit from international viewers, and remain available for new subscribers to discover. <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/terra-nova-steven-spielberg-show-canceled-early\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Terra Nova<\/em>&#8216;s single season<\/a> demonstrated considerable potential, and it is a shame the series arrived before the entertainment landscape revolved around stories of a similar scale. Had <em><strong>Terra Nova<\/strong><\/em> premiered later, it might have had a much better chance to become the ambitious <em>Lost<\/em> successor it was always trying to be.<\/p>\n<div
