Since spinoffs are based on only a specific portion of what made an original property successful, they tend to have less lasting power, and thus only appeal to a fraction of the audience. The expectations of following <a href=\"https:\/\/collider.com\/tag\/buffy-the-vampire-slayer\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Buffy the Vampire Slayer <\/em><\/strong><\/a>were tremendous, as the <a href=\"https:\/\/collider.com\/tag\/joss-whedon\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Joss Whedon<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>coming-of-age fantasy series became a cultural phenomenon with a complex mythology, memorable characters, and a very specific tone. <strong>The spinoff <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/collider.com\/tag\/angel\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Angel<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong><strong>learned the best lessons from <\/strong><strong><em>Buffy the Vampire Slayer<\/em><\/strong>, but transformed into a unique series of its own by taking a completely different narrative approach. If <em>Buffy the Vampire Slayer <\/em>was the ultimate example of a \u201chero\u2019s journey\u201d told over the course of a protagonist\u2019s adolescence, then <em>Angel <\/em>was a dark, conflicted character drama about the fungible line between good and evil.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- No AdsNinja v10 Client! --><\/p>\n<p>It was early on in <em>Buffy the Vampire Slayer <\/em>that the character Angel (<a href=\"https:\/\/collider.com\/tag\/person\/david-boreanaz\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>David Boreanaz<\/strong><\/a>), the enigmatic love interest to Buffy Summers (<a href=\"https:\/\/collider.com\/tag\/sarah-michelle-gellar\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Sarah Michelle Gellar<\/strong><\/a>), was actually a vampire who was cursed with immortality and seeking redemption. Although Angel became an ally to Buffy over the course of the first three seasons, it quickly became clear that the \u201cwill they or won\u2019t they\u201d dynamic was holding both characters back. It was at the same time that Buffy and her friends went off to college in Season 4 that <strong>the first season of <\/strong><strong><em>Angel <\/em><\/strong><strong>relocated to Los Angeles<\/strong>, where Angel starts his own detective agency helping fend off supernatural threats. <em>Angel <\/em>may have begun as a slightly darker, neo-noir version of the \u201cmonster of the week\u201d series that <em>Buffy the Vampire Slayer <\/em>had originated as, but it steadily became a more ambiguous and demanding show about the complications of morality. <em>Buffy the Vampire Slayer <\/em>struggled to reach the same degree of excellence that it had attained in its first three seasons, but <a href=\"https:\/\/collider.com\/angel-tv-fred-death\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Angel <\/em>got more compelling and interesting<\/a> as it went along.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- No AdsNinja v10 Client! --><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"lsquo-angel-rsquo-is-a-subversive-complex-spin-off\">\n                        \u2018Angel\u2019 Is a Subversive, Complex Spin-Off<br \/>\n               <\/h2>\n<p><em>Angel <\/em>benefits from containing a more complicated set of protagonists who had matured since their time on <em>Buffy the Vampire Slayer<\/em>. Cordelia Chase (<a href=\"https:\/\/collider.com\/tag\/charisma-carpenter\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Charisma Carpenter<\/strong><\/a>) began her time on <em>Buffy the Vampire Slayer <\/em>as a vain, self-absorbed teenager with a grudge against Buffy, but <em>Angel <\/em>turns her into <a href=\"https:\/\/collider.com\/angel-hole-in-the-world-episode\/\" target=\"_blank\">a deeply empathetic, intelligent ally to Angel<\/a> whose strength is seeing the good in people. Similarly, Wesley Wyndam-Pryce (<strong>Alexis Denisof<\/strong>) was introduced in the third season of <em>Buffy the Vampire Slayer <\/em>as an immature, inexperienced member of the Watchers, and <em>Angel <\/em>shows his growth into a leader who sees the importance of sacrificing personal pleasures for the sake of retaining balance. <strong>The biggest shift in <\/strong><strong><em>Angel <\/em><\/strong><strong>came in the characterization of the titular hero<\/strong>, as Angel himself grows beyond the somewhat humorless, detached anti-hero he was in <em>Buffy the Vampire Slayer<\/em>.
