Have you watched \u2018The Odyssey\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t seen \u2018The Odyssey,\u2019 so I\u2019m not really too aware of that,\u201d Grammer admitted, but added that there are times when certain entertainment \u201chits me over the head\u201d to the point where, \u201cit\u2019s a little exhausting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the past was less multicultural than Hollywood would like to portray it, saying, \u201cI think old England is probably full of White people\u201d and that \u201cI think historical significance should be respected a little bit, culturally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you think Hollywood will ever get back there?\u201d Miller asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah. Hollywood isn\u2019t very good at telling people what they have to see, you know, because then they flop,\u2019 Grammer replied.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>\u201cFrasier\u201d star Kelsey Grammer spoke on\u00a0\u201cThe Katie Miller Podcast\u201d\u00a0about how modern Hollywood keeps getting in its own way. <span class=\"credit\">FOX News<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cBut they\u2019ve had, like, successive\u00a0years of just flops,\u201d\u00a0Miller replied.<\/p>\n<p>One prominent example of a controversial adaptation that flopped was \u201cSnow White,\u201d which reportedly netted Disney an approximately $170 million loss. Pixar \u2014 under parent company Disney \u2014 has tried to pivot away\u00a0from a series of flops\u00a0by cutting LGBTQ themes and warning not to make films inspired by the creators\u2019 own life stories.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter\u00a0told The Wall Street Journal\u00a0that he chose this pivot because \u201cWe\u2019re making a movie, not hundreds of millions of dollars of therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Podcaster Katie Miller, the wife of White House deputy chief of staff for policy Stephen Miller, observed, \u201cHollywood seems determined to reinvent nearly every classic, like \u2018The Odyssey,\u2019 and distort it just a little bit to fit their views. I think eventually flopping doesn\u2019t work so well,\u201d Grammer said. \u201cWe\u2019re not shooting a lot of movies these days. But I mean, I\u2019m glad they made \u2018The Odyssey.\u2019 I mean, I don\u2019t know if they\u2019ve, you know, pitched it too far in to our particular culture to divorce you from the idea of what actually happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, there have been numerous movies in the culture-war spotlight, ranging from remakes like \u201cThe Little Mermaid\u201d and \u201cSnow White\u201d to adaptations of ancient history like \u201cCleopatra\u201d and\u00a0\u201cThe Odyssey.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Grammer noted that the past was less multicultural than Hollywood would like to portray it, saying, \u201cI think old England is probably full of White people\u201d and that \u201cI think historical significance should be respected a little bit, culturally.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">Pamela Littky\/Paramount+<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Emily Wilson, who famously wrote what some call a feminist translation of Homer\u2019s \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d that\u00a0helped influence the film,\u00a0panned director Christopher Nolan\u2019s adaptation for missing the spirit of the original heroic epic.
