Amid renewed discussion over the perils of digital-only media, a policy dating back at least 17 years in the UK and Europe has drawn fresh scrutiny. It allows Sony to close PlayStation accounts after three years of inactivity \u2014 effectively deleting games and any other purchases attached to the account.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you have not used your Account for at least 36 months we may take steps to close it,\u201d reads PlayStation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.playstation.com\/en-dk\/legal\/terms-of-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">UK and European Terms of Service<\/a>. \u201cIn that case, we will contact you via the email address registered to your Account and give you 6 months to either log in to your Account or contact us and tell us to keep your Account open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It continues, \u201cAfter your Account is closed, you will not be able to access the PlayStation Online Services or use the Digital Products purchased with that Account. Account closure is irreversible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Related Video<\/p>\n<p>For now at least, similar language doesn\u2019t appear in PlayStation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.playstation.com\/en-us\/legal\/terms-of-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">US Terms of Service<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/videocardz.com\/newz\/sonys-36-month-inactive-playstation-account-cancellation-rule-is-not-new\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">VideoCardz.com<\/a> points out, this inactivity clause dates back to at least 2009, when the Terms of Service gave Sony the right to cancel your account if it had \u201cnot been used for 18 months.\u201d The tech site\u2019s report reveals that Sony extended the time period to 24 months in 2016 and then 36 months in 2019. The latter update added that the rule only applied where it was allowed by local laws.<\/p>\n<p>While inactive UK and European PlayStation Store users receive a six-month warning to keep their accounts open under this policy, its existence highlights that digital media doesn\u2019t offer ownership, but merely a license purchase.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/accounts-billing\/manage\/microsoft-account-activity-policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Terms of Service<\/a> also says the company can close an account after two years of inactivity, but it is only applicable if no purchases have been made with the account.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not a great time for gamers who prefer physical media.<\/p>\n<p>Most current-generation consoles don\u2019t take discs or cartridges as <a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/2026\/03\/playstation-price-increase\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prices<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/2026\/05\/nintendo-switch-2-bundle-deal-choose-your-game\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">continue<\/a> to rise.\u00a0Meanwhile,\u00a0an increasing number of Switch 2 games are being released as key cards, which act as physical keys to download the game itself.<\/p>\n<p>As a preview of what\u2019s to come, the \u201cphysical version\u201d of <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4vf2Gvf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><em>Grand Theft Auto VI<\/em><\/a> will not contain an <a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/2026\/06\/grand-theft-auto-6-pre-order-price-editions-bonuses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">actual disc<\/a>, but a download code inside the box.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<script async=\"async\" data-cfasync=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/pl30214220.effectivecpmnetwork.com\/9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<div id=\"container-9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\"><\/div>\r\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over the past few weeks, Sony has announced that it is removing 551 film and TV titles from the PlayStation Store on September 1st and will no longer sell physical copies of PlayStation games beginning in January 2028.
