After an extensive evaluation at the Mayo Clinic, I was diagnosed with Parkinson\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Noting that the loss of movement has been \u201cone of the hardest things to explain,\u201d Simon shared that around the same time, she also discovered she had basal cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer on her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cancer was removed, but the surgery affected my appearance and made me more self-conscious about being seen in public,\u201d the \u201cYou\u2019re So Vain\u201d singer noted. \u201cI have always been more critical of my appearance than anyone else could possibly imagine (check out the irony of having written \u201cYou\u2019re So Vain\u201d), and this gave my inner critic quite a lot of new material.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetween my mobility issues, the Parkinson\u2019s diagnosis, the surgery, and the emotional effects of it all, withdrawing from public view was the most palatable reaction,\u201d Simon explained. \u201cIf a person is allowed to hibernate during both winter and summer, then I have become an all-season bear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Simon\u2014whose upcoming album will mark her first set of original songs in 18 years\u2014has \u201cnot stopped living.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<script async=\"async\" data-cfasync=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/pl30214220.effectivecpmnetwork.com\/9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<div id=\"container-9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\"><\/div>\r\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cEventually, there were periods when I could not walk without considerable help,\u201d she continued. \u201cMy family and I knew that something more was going on.
