She says: \u201cI find it so interesting that we all just call them con people, but it&#8217;s confidence artists. That&#8217;s what it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The voice of Princess Peach in The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) which made $1.3 billion worldwide and Beth Harmon in the Netflix hit <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/3am\/tv-film-news\/olivia-wilde-invite-penelope-cruz-37448557\" rel=\"follow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">The Queen\u2019s Gambit<\/a> (2020) &#8211; which reached 62 million households in 28 days &#8211; Anya is already a talisman for Lucky, which is Apple\u2019s number one show worldwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Fascinated by the ethos of the con artist, Anya, 30, believes much of their success is down to people\u2019s unwillingness to accept that they are being conned. \u201cI was really interested in how willing people are to believe in what you tell them &#8211; and in the way that you convey that message. They just want to be told and people want structure.\u201d Lucky, released on July 15, is Anya\u2019s first time as executive producer, a role she took after being approached by Reese Witherspoon&#8217;s media and production company Hello Sunshine. The miniseries is based on the 2021 novel by Marissa Stapley.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Legally Blonde star Reece said recently of the actress: \u201cAnya was always Lucky. She was the first and only actress we shared the book with. She\u2019s a born producer. She cares deeply, connects viscerally to the character. \u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The series opens to a night of celebrations, between Lucky and her boyfriend, Cary (Drew Starkey) following a successful multimillion dollar heist. But she wakes to find both he and the proceeds have gone. She\u2019s left penniless and on the run from both the FBI and ruthless crime boss Priscilla (Annette Bening) who wants the money. Keen to prove herself as a producer, as well as through her acting, Anya describes her excitement at being invited to join the cast and the production team by Hello Sunshine &#8211; calling it \u201cextraordinary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The actress, who also has a production company, Lady Killer, says: \u201cThis was my first opportunity to really do it [produce] and I thought, \u2018OK, if I love the book and I feel like I have something to add here, this is such a good first opportunity.&#8217; I read the book and I was fascinated by the idea of somebody in a genre that we&#8217;ve all seen and we all love, which is, you know, cons. It&#8217;s sexy and it&#8217;s George Clooney [Danny Ocean in the Ocean\u2019s movies] and it&#8217;s a fantastic genre.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Digging deep into the psychology not just of the con artist, but also of being a woman on the run, she adds: \u201cWhat is the reality of that like? What is it like when you can&#8217;t stand still? When nobody knows your real name? When you&#8217;re constantly having to lie in order to be able to get to the next day? I am detail orientated and I&#8217;m also really passionate and excited and obsessive about the thing that I care about, which is this art form.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI feel so grateful to have worked with wonderful people, who were empowering and who cared and taught me a lot along the way. She says: \u201cSomething that I was really interested in is, I wanted there to be a form of audience wish fulfillment, where you place yourself in her shoes and you think, \u2018gosh, I hope I&#8217;d be able to think of something like that.\u2019 Or \u2018I hope <u\/>that I would be that, you know, quick-witted, essentially.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">After playing characters like Beth Harmon, a chess champion, despite her flaws; or Princess Peach, an impressive leader, Anya also enjoyed the challenge of playing a master of survival, who is, nevertheless, a second generation criminal. She says: \u201cI&#8217;ve done a lot of projects where I&#8217;m supposed to be the best in the world at whatever physical activity I&#8217;m doing and that&#8217;s been so much fun, because it scratches the perfectionist side of my brain.
