At the time, she had been living and working in the Cape Coral and North Fort Myers area, police said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor more than forty years, Rose Marie Gayhart\u2019s family has carried the weight of not knowing what happened to her. While this identification brings long-awaited answers, it also strengthens our resolve,\u201d Cape Coral Police Chief Anthony Sizemore said.<\/p>\n<p>Gayhart\u2019s sister, Laurie Travis, said she spent decades searching for answers about what happened to her missing sister \u2014 and never gave up hope that she would find them.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Gayhart was reported missing by her parents in Dansville, New York, in March 1985. <span class=\"credit\">Spectrum News 1<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI mean, there\u2019s always that wondering, where are you? Where are you?\u201d Travis said in a 2017 interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winknews.com\/news\/lee\/woman-still-seeking-answers-in-sister-s-1985-cape-coral-disappearance\/article_cc583b90-36ee-5cb6-a18c-69a024cb58d9.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WINK<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of her disappearance, Gayhart was working at a Cape Coral restaurant once known as Big Howie\u2019s Hot Dogs.<\/p>\n<p>Months before she vanished, she had moved to a trailer park in North Fort Myers on Christmas Day 1984 from New York with her boyfriend and his mother, her sister said.<\/p>\n<p>Travis said that neighbors of where her sister was staying believed she was murdered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think she was murdered, the neighbors were all saying when they did the investigation,\u201d Travis told the outlet.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Her remains were stumbled upon by kayakers in a canal in northeast Cape Coral in May 2024. <span class=\"credit\">capepd\/Instagram<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAlso, there was a lot of crashing and banging and fighting going on at the trailer park all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some neighbors also believed Gayhart was pregnant and trying to go home \u2014 but her boyfriend refused to let her leave, Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers reported, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winknews.com\/news\/lee\/woman-still-seeking-answers-in-sister-s-1985-cape-coral-disappearance\/article_cc583b90-36ee-5cb6-a18c-69a024cb58d9.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to WINK<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Others believed the boyfriend\u2019s mother had her own reasons for wanting Gayhart gone.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Her death is now being investigated as a homicide.  <span class=\"credit\">Spectrum News 1<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMy mother got a letter from his mom, stated that she got the bus ticket for her [Gayhart] and everything, that she was hanging in bars and she was no good and this and that and she was sending her back to my mother and then she never came back,\u201d Travis told WINK.<\/p>\n<p>With the remains now identified as Gayhart\u2019s, the case is considered an active homicide investigation, police said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo matter how much time passes, even after four decades, our investigations do not stop, and our pursuit of justice does not end,\u201d Sizemore said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is now considered an active homicide investigation, and we are committed to following every lead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anyone with information on Gayhart\u2019s case is urged to call the Cape Coral Police Department at 239-574-3223.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<script async=\"async\" data-cfasync=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/pl30214220.effectivecpmnetwork.com\/9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<div id=\"container-9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\"><\/div>\r\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Remains found by kayakers in Florida in 2024 have been identified as a missing New York woman who disappeared more than 40 years ago.
