{"id":18278,"date":"2026-07-26T23:28:43","date_gmt":"2026-07-26T18:28:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=18278"},"modified":"2026-07-26T23:28:43","modified_gmt":"2026-07-26T18:28:43","slug":"margaret-brennan-confronts-john-kennedy-on-trump-backed-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=18278","title":{"rendered":"Margaret Brennan Confronts John Kennedy on Trump-Backed Bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"post-body\">\n<p>CBS News\u2019s <strong>Margaret Brennan<\/strong> confronted Sen. <strong>John Kennedy<\/strong> (R-LA) over whether \u201cjamming\u201d the Trump-backed SAVE America Act through Congress would be good for the country\u2019s \u201cfaith\u201d in the election system.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday\u2019s <em>Face The Nation<\/em>, Kennedy said the Senate needed to \u201ctake another crack at the SAVE Act\u201d before summer recess.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to put the House budget resolution on the floor, it\u2019s the only chance we have to get money to defense, the farmers, and to take another crack at the SAVE Act by voting on it as part of a resolution bill,\u201d Kennedy said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just said you wanted to move forward on what the House just started the process on,\u201d Brennan began. \u201cThat would be a party-line vote. That would be Republicans jamming this thing through, and the Save Act, as you know \u2014 or even some version of it \u2014 is highly partisan, highly controversial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBigger picture: Isn\u2019t it going to hurt faith in our election process if a Republican-only policy to change how elections are run is rammed through 100 days, you know less than 100 days out from the election?\u201d Brennan asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, in my opinion, for both sides to have credibility in the elections, in our elections, we need to do two things and only two things,\u201d Kennedy said. \u201cNumber one, you have to prove you are who you say you are in order to register to vote and to vote, and number two, however you decide to vote, that\u2019s up to the states. We need to go back to having an election day, not an election month. We got to know the results of the election that night or shortly thereafter if it\u2019s close. That to me is what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/politics\/thune-hits-back-at-trump-wh-criticism-on-save-america-act-flailing-then-you-get-on-the-phone\/\">the SAVE act is all about<\/a>, and I think we can pass it and I think we can craft it in a way to survive a bird bath. But we\u2019re not going to know if we don\u2019t try.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrants, in other words, to states to incentivize, not requirements for states to take out,\u201d Brennan added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, but that\u2019s not the only thing. I\u2019ve been contacted by some really smart people about a way to do it in addition to the grants.
