However, if you&#8217;ve previously submerged your iPad in water, you&#8217;ll know that Apple&#8217;s tablets, however, are not water-resistant.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That will soon change.<\/p>\n<p>Apple&#8217;s first water-resistant iPad is currently planned to launch by the end of this year, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2026\/07\/25\/first-water-resistant-ipad\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\"><u>new report<\/u><\/a>. According to the report, Apple designed a &#8220;vibration-based speaker system,&#8221; where sound transmits from the surface of the tablet&#8217;s chassis. This means that the new iPad mini will not need physical speaker holes, which will greatly limit points of entry for water, dust, and other unwanted particles.<\/p>\n<p>MacRumors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2026\/07\/25\/first-water-resistant-ipad\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\"><u>points out<\/u><\/a> that Apple described such a technology in a 2014 patent, which means the company has been working on this for some time.<\/p>\n<section x-data=\"window.newsletter({ isDeal: false })\" x-init=\"init()\" aria-label=\"Newsletter Sign-Up\" class=\"relative invisible my-12 mx-auto w-full max-w-3xl md:my-16 ziff-component accent-cut-for-gradient-bg accent-cut-border-for-gradient-bg bg-gradient-fuchsia-secondary p-[2px]\">\n<p>\n            <span class=\"text-gradient-fuchsia-secondary\">Mashable Light Speed<\/span>\n        <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p>The new iPad mini&#8217;s IP rating, which measures a device&#8217;s resistance to dust and liquids like water, is currently unknown. The iPhone 17 has an IP68 rating, which means it could be submerged in a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The iPad mini line last had a refresh when it received the A17 Pro chipset in 2024. However, other than that, the device remained the same. The iPad mini was last redesigned in 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Bloomberg<\/em>&#8216;s Apple insider Mark Gurman has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-07-16\/apple-nears-launch-of-oled-ipad-mini-new-ipad-air-and-base-ipad-in-2027\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\"><u>previously reported<\/u><\/a> that the iPad mini was set to get some big upgrades, including an OLED display, which would be a first for the device.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A release before this summer&#8217;s beach trips and pool parties would&#8217;ve certainly been ideal. But you could always start planning for next summer. The new iPad mini is expected to launch by October.<\/p>\n<p>Apple currently sells the base model iPad mini for $599 after the company <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/tech\/apple-price-increases-full-list\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\"><u>hiked prices<\/u><\/a> across its products earlier this year.
