{"id":17031,"date":"2026-07-25T18:54:14","date_gmt":"2026-07-25T13:54:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=17031"},"modified":"2026-07-25T18:54:14","modified_gmt":"2026-07-25T13:54:14","slug":"jordan-deveys-parents-fear-ex-nfler-may-have-suffered-from-cte-before-suicide-at-38","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=17031","title":{"rendered":"Jordan Devey&#8217;s parents fear ex-NFLer may have suffered from CTE before suicide at 38"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content%2Fuploads%2Fsites%2F2%2F2026%2F07%2Fnewspress-collage-dtpn0ulkm-1784985888164.jpg?quality%3D90%26strip%3Dall%261784971670\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The parents of former NFL guard Jordan Devey, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/24\/sports\/former-nfl-guard-jordan-devey-dies-by-suicide-at-38\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">who died by suicide at the age of 38<\/a>, worry that their son may have suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).<\/p>\n<p>CTE is \u201ca brain disease likely caused by repeated head injuries,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/chronic-traumatic-encephalopathy\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20370921\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">per the Mayo Clinic<\/a>, and NFL players are four times more likely to die from neurodegenerative diseases than the general population, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.massgeneralbrigham.org\/en\/about\/newsroom\/press-releases\/nfl-players-four-times-more-likely-to-suffer-neurodegenerative-mortality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to a 2026 report<\/a> from Mass General Brigham, Boston University and the Concussion &amp; CTE Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that he possibly suffered from CTE,\u201d mother Leslie Devey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13now.com\/news\/local-news\/northern-utah\/parents-of-former-nfl-jordan-devey-speak-out-after-death-by-suicide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Fox 13 in Salt Lake City<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Jordan Devey spent three seasons with the Chiefs. <span class=\"credit\">Icon Sportswire via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She added of his seven-year NFL career: \u201cWe also feel like this was partly why he\u2019s not with us any longer at the age of 38.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A GoFundMe page created to support the Devey family stated that the star \u201ctook his own life, leaving his family to navigate an incredibly difficult and heartbreaking time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The post did not provide any more details on his death, and Fox 13 reported he died Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Jordan Devey\u2019s wife, Linsey, posted to Instagram a photo of her alongside her husband in a hospital and said the couple had been set to celebrate their 15th wedding anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have filled the walls of our homes and hearts with countless memories, joys, struggles, and triumphs. We brought 4 beautiful children into this world that have your eyes, freckles, and compassion,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DbKSTWcjclz\/?img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Linsey wrote in her Instagram post<\/a>. \u201cYou were our hero and our hearts ache in your absence. We love you. We miss you. And as you said in your last words to me, \u2018we\u2019ll talk soon.\u2019\u2764\ufe0f\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leslie told Fox 13 that due to the \u201ccondition of what happened with his death,\u201d they will not be able to test for CTE and find out definitively if he suffered from the disease.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Leslie Devey (L) and Kerry Devey (R) speaking with Fox 13. <span class=\"credit\">Fox 13<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The 2026 study from Mass General Brigham, Boston University and the Concussion &amp; CTE Foundation studied 19,824 NFL players from 1960-2019 and concluded that NFLers were 3.8 times more likely to have all-cause dementia and 3.88 times higher to suffer from Parkinson\u2019s than non-players.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cA fourfold increase in dementia rates\u00a0from a presumed environmental cause is immense \u2014 and brain bank studies indicate that CTE is the primary explanation,\u201d wrote study co-senior author Jesse Mez.<\/p>\n<p>Jordan\u2019s father, Kerry, expressed regrets.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"\/>\n<p>\u201cYou think you\u2019re strong until something like this happens\u2026and it brings you to your knees,\u201d Kerry told the station.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt brings in the what-ifs. What if we\u2019d have done something differently? You\u2019re not fighting the battle alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jordan played for five teams in his seven seasons, winning a Super Bowl with the Patriots in 2014 while also suiting up for the 49ers, Chiefs, Raiders and Bills before his career ended after the 2020 campaign<\/p>\n<p>He appeared in 44 games with 21 starts and spent his most time \u2014 three seasons \u2014 with the Chiefs.<\/p>\n<p>Jordan leaves behind his wife and four children, and the fundraising page has raised nearly $92,000, as of Saturday morning.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<p><em>If you are struggling with suicidal thoughts or are experiencing a mental health crisis and live in New York City, you can call 1-888-NYC-WELL for free and confidential crisis counseling.
