Watch the show first to get a sense of what\u2019s going on! Or just dive into the movie, a low-budget time travel farce that pulls off some incredible bits of comedy. Both longtime fans and newcomers to <i>Nirvanna the Band the Show<\/i> have raved about the film, which in itself is an impressive feat. But there\u2019s still plenty to savor for all ages, from Nicholas Galitzine\u2019s gung-ho performance to a lot of its one-off character bits (Sasheer Zamata stealth MVP? Wait, no, Alison Brie gets that trophy). Also, this is perhaps the most I\u2019ve enjoyed a Jared Leto performance in\u2026 Ever? He\u2019s a shockingly good Skeletor, who this movie lets commit to being <i>evil<\/i> \u2014 just one of many choices that confirm how little interest director Travis Knight has in taking He-Man seriously. The <a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/2024\/01\/jake-johnson-self-reliance-movie-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">delightful Jake Johnson<\/a> stars as Dusty, a washed-up tennis star who reluctantly discovers the like-tennis-except-easier activity and comes to see its appeal \u2014 guiding him on that journey is the always luminous\/hilarious Mary Steenburgen, a divorcee attempting to find her new passion in life. Ed Harris also gets used well here (as opposed to <a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/2026\/07\/ed-harris-dutton-ranch-singing-scene-cut\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other projects we could mention<\/a>) as Dusty\u2019s father \u2014 Harris\u2019s bone-dry delivery, paired with some wonderfully absurd lines of dialogue, is a highlight. Plus, <a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/2025\/02\/lynne-marie-stewart-miss-yvonne-pee-wee-dead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the late Lynne Marie Stewart<\/a> gets some of the best lines in the movie, while John McEnroe comes dangerously close to stealing the final act. (Of <i>course<\/i> McEnroe is here. But this wild-ass\u00a0<i>Big Bang Theory<\/i>\u00a0spinoff felt like it deserved more discussion.<\/p>\n<p><i>TBBT<\/i> is a touchstone for so many \u2014 if you still have access to the cable channel TBS, you know how often it still reruns there \u2014 but <i>Stuart Fails\u2026<\/i> is <i>very<\/i> different. It\u2019s shot in single-cam, for one thing, and for another it\u2019s a romp through different dimensions (and genre pastiches) packed with guest stars from the parent series. It\u2019s not ground-breaking, but I found myself curious about where each episode would go next and laughed at its nerdier jokes. And that\u2019s said as someone whose familiarity with Sheldon and Penny is so limited that I just had to double-check those character names on Wikipedia. (Didn\u2019t <i>think<\/i> it was Peggy, but wanted to be sure.)<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Blast From the Past<\/h2>\n<p><i>The home screens of streaming services are always packed with the latest new releases, but we don\u2019t spend enough time appreciating how much good library content is streaming across all of these platforms. Part of what makes the show such a joy is the returning voice cast, including the incredible Pamela Adlon as the show\u2019s perennial Bobby Hill.<\/p>\n<p>Over Zoom, Pamela told me how playing the role of a young boy from Texas has \u201cnever been hard. Not even when I was crowning during all three of my pregnancies, when Bobby was pregnant with my three daughters. It\u2019s just in me\u2026 It\u2019s so funny. I can\u2019t separate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The revival season aged Bobby up to the age of 21, something Pamela said she was \u201cvery mindful\u201d about with her performance. In fact, at first she wasn\u2019t sure if the producers would want her to \u201cgo into a Barry White area,\u201d and eventually decided to \u201cmake a choice that I felt good about, that I could live in as Bobby. And I guess it possibly might be working.\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.televisionacademy.com\/awards\/nominees-winners\/2026\/outstanding-character-voice-over-performance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Her recent Emmy nomination<\/a>\u00a0suggests that might be the case.<\/p>\n<p><b>What Do They Recommend?<\/b> For the second week in a row, we have a <b><i>Widow\u2019s Bay<\/i><\/b> recommendation. But Pamela\u2019s got a special connection to the series, as her <a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/video\/king-of-the-hill-revivial-cast-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>King of the Hill<\/i> co-stars Stephen Root and Toby Huss<\/a> also play roles on the Apple TV horror comedy:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">I started watching it and I went to the table read at\u00a0<i>King of the Hill<\/i>\u00a0and I was like, \u201cHas everybody seen Root in\u00a0<i>Widow\u2019s<\/i>\u00a0f*cking\u00a0<i>Bay<\/i>? Because it is hilarious.\u201d I was roasting him and Toby, because Toby was in it too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">I think [director Hiro Murai] did an amazing job. Love Matthew Rhys. Love everybody in the show. The cast is so perfect, and it\u2019s really scary. My youngest daughter Rocket and I were watching it, and you know when Patricia is running? We were dying. So funny.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">I\u2019m also watching <b><i>Cape Fear<\/i><\/b> (Apple TV). I have a couple notes. I\u2019ve got a few questions. But I am enjoying the shit out of it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><b>It\u2019s not impossible to imagine you guest-starring on <i>Widow\u2019s Bay<\/i>. Do you know who you\u2019d want to play?<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">[<i>Laughs<\/i>] Oh my God, I don\u2019t care. I can play Root\u2019s dad, his wife, his grandma, his daughter. Whichever.<\/p>\n<p>Let Pamela play Stephen Root\u2019s dad in <i>Widow\u2019s Bay<\/i> Season 2! While the universe works on that, do enjoy the new season of <i>King of the Hill<\/i>, streaming now on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kmtrak.com\/F876M7\/3HWS9F7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Hulu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">One Last One Before Bed<\/h2>\n<p><i>Finally, let\u2019s spotlight a movie or TV show that\u2019s not only great, but won\u2019t take up too much of your time: Think of this section as the answer to the question \u201cWhat\u2019s something I can watch before hitting the hay, that won\u2019t keep me up too late?\u201d The only rule is that it has to be less than 95 minutes if it\u2019s a movie, or less than 30 minutes an episode if it\u2019s a TV show. Berlant and Early\u2019s dynamic is a master class in passive aggression, and paired with their delight for the absurd, the special becomes a breezy watch.
