He was 59.<\/p>\n<p>The Queens native\u2019s death was announced Friday by his bandmates, who described Koller as a \u201cbeloved friend and an iconic frontman.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s with unbelievable sadness that we announce to our worldwide hardcore family the passing of our brother Lou Koller. The level of loss that we feel at this time is overwhelming,\u201d the band wrote in a statement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DbMSEsnxDxV\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on Instagram<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Lou Koller, the longtime frontman of New York hardcore band Sick of It All, has died after battling cancer. <span class=\"credit\">Redferns via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis year would have marked Sick of It All\u2019s 40th anniversary as a band, and Lou\u2019s camaraderie, commitment and enthusiasm were always steadfast throughout the years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have lost a beloved friend and an iconic frontman. Lou had the power to raise everyone\u2019s spirits at our shows with a smile and a sarcastic comment, and he won people over wherever we played, from every culture and every corner of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Koller revealed in June 2024 that doctors had found a cancerous tumor in his esophagus extending into his stomach, forcing the band to cancel a European tour while he underwent treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Fans and fellow musicians rallied around the singer, raising money for his medical expenses through a benefit concert at Irving Plaza in Manhattan later that year.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2025, Koller said he had completed his final round of chemotherapy and had been declared cancer-free. Months later, he revealed the cancer had returned.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Queens-born Koller revealed in 2024 that he was battling esophageal cancer after doctors found a tumor. <span class=\"credit\">Redferns<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The band also thanked fans who supported Koller during his illness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this time of intense grief, we must again acknowledge the great help and support offered by everyone who donated to Lou\u2019s medical fund,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou all helped Lou feel very special and very loved as he battled away these last two years. His battle is over now and he can finally rest. Hopefully he can somehow still see and feel the beautiful, positive mark he left on the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Sick of It All perform during the Hellfest Open Air Festival on June 19, 2022 in Clisson, France. <span class=\"credit\">Redferns<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Koller, who was born and raised in Queens alongside his three brothers, including future bandmate Pete Koller, attended Francis Lewis High School before launching Sick of It All with his younger brother and drummer Armand Majidi in 1986.<\/p>\n<p>The singer once credited growing up in the borough with shaping his outlook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the way we were raised in our neighborhood in Queens. You didn\u2019t go out looking for trouble,\u201d he told <a href=\"https:\/\/antimatter.substack.com\/p\/in-conversation-lou-koller-of-sick\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anti-Matter<\/a> in 2024.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"\/>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s funny that, a lot of times, these people who write songs about growing up hard and all that \u2014 they <em>make<\/em> their lives hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The band became one of the defining acts in New York hardcore, releasing its debut album \u201cBlood, Sweat and No Tears\u201d in 1989.<\/p>\n<p>Sick of It All went on to release 12 studio albums, including 1994\u2019s \u201cScratch the Surface\u201d and 2018\u2019s \u201cWake the Sleeping Dragon!\u201d while building an international following through decades of touring.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Sick of It All became one of New York hardcore\u2019s most influential bands after forming in Queens in 1986. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 2016, Sick of It All celebrated its 30th anniversary with a sold-out hometown show at Webster Hall before closing out the year with three intimate performances in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens, where Koller said fans snapped up tickets in just 15 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we can\u2019t sell this out in New York City, we gotta call it quits. Because this is our hometown,\u201d he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therockpit.net\/2016\/lou-koller-sick-of-it-all-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Rockpit<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n<p>WWE superstar CM Punk was among those who mourned Koller\u2019s death, crediting the band\u2019s 1995 hit \u201cCloberin\u2019 Time\u201d as inspiration for his entrance motto.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLove you Lou and SOIA,\u201d Punk said. \u201cThank you for the soundtrack for my life. Sending hugs. Tonight\u2019s \u201cclobberin\u2019 time\u201d is for Lou.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Koller also received admiration across the music landscape. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll our love to the SOIA family and especially the Koller family,\u201d the Dropkick Murphys posted. \u201cRest In Peace Lou we are so glad to have shared many great memories with you. Always a class act and gentleman.
