In her remarks, reported by <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.status.news\/p\/cecilia-vega-cbs-60-minutes-bari-weiss\" target=\"_blank\">Status newsletter<\/a>, she told John Qui\u00f1ones that, among other things, she was encouraged to insert footage of protesters attacking ICE officers in plain clothes, but could find no credible examples for a piece on the immigration crackdown in Minneapolis, in which federal agents shot and killed Alex Pretti and Renee Good. Per Status, Vega said nother suggestion was made to find a clip of Minneapolis\u2019 police rolling his eyes at Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey\u2019s suggestion that local police confront ICE agents. No such moment was found, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tOn another piece about the war in Iran, Vega said that she was told to introduce a story by saying, \u201cWho is winning the war? Iran is totally outgunned by the United States and Israel.\u201d Per Status, Vega called it an \u201cadministration talking point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIn another example, on West Virginians impacted by cuts to nutritional assistance programs, she said that she was queried why she did not interview JD Vance, who wrote <em>Hillbilly Elegy<\/em>, even though his account of his experiences in Ohio was published a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe proposed changes did not make it into her pieces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tVega and Sharyn Alfonsi were among those fired from<em> 60 Minutes <\/em>in May, with executive producer Tanya Simon replaced by Nick Bilton. Correspondent Scott Pelley was fired the next week after he challenged Bilton in a staff meeting and said that <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/cbs-news\/\" id=\"auto-tag_cbs-news\" data-tag=\"cbs-news\">CBS News<\/a> editor in chief Bari Weiss was \u201cmurdering\u201d the show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tVega <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/05\/cecilia-vega-60-minutes-firing-1236929737\/\">issued a statement <\/a>at the time saying, \u201cIn recent months, my producing teams and I have experienced efforts to insert political bias into our stories.\u00a0 Reporting teams have held back\u00a0on submitting story pitches about important news topics out of fear of the internal repercussions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cLet\u2019s call this what it is: censorship, both imposed and self-driven.\u00a0 It is dangerous for the show and dangerous for democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tShe said that she \u201cheld the line and refused to incorporate suggestions that offend the conscience, a phrase I borrow from a colleague who has also fought to keep questionable editorial suggestions away from the facts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tPelley <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/06\/scott-pelley-60-minutes-bari-weiss-trump-bias-1236949172\/\">also made claims <\/a>of politically motivated interference in an interview in The New York Times, conducted shortly after he was terminated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tCBS News has not commented on Vega\u2019s latest remarks, but management has pushed back on the notion that the requested changes were anything more than a part of the editorial process. After her statement in May on her firing, the network said, \u201cWe respect Ms. Vega and her contributions, but her claims are not based in reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIn June, when asked about Vega and Pelley\u2019s claims of political interference, Weiss told The Wall Street Journal, \u201cWhat\u2019s being called \u2018editorial interference\u2019 is in reality the job description of an editor in chief.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tSome staffers at the network have grown wary at the attention to the upheaval at the news division, and take issue with the notion that it\u2019s become Fox News-lite, with its White House team in particular continuing to deliver scoops. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/cbs-evening-news\/\" id=\"auto-tag_cbs-evening-news\" data-tag=\"cbs-evening-news\">CBS Evening News<\/a> <\/em>also recently ran a piece on the war, \u201cIs the Iran war winnable?\u201d with national security analyst Aaron MacLean, that emphasized the least bad options facing Trump. \u201cMarch 1st, he said four to five weeks. Here we are. It\u2019s July,\u201d said anchor Tony Dokoupil. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tBut <em>60 Minutes<\/em> long operated as almost a separate unit within the news division, enjoying a great deal of autonomy. Last year, before Weiss became editor and chief and Skydance acquired CBS-parent Paramount, Bill Owens resigned as executive producer, saying that he was no longer able to make independent decisions about the show.
