Social media all but exploded when the first \u201cMoana\u201d trailer dropped, and the typically bald mega-star had flowing brunette locks. Johnson found the response \u201cvery, very funny.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI laughed so fucking hard when we first came out, and people saw me in a wig for the first time,\u201d he added. \u201cThey memed me. The internet did the internet. It was very, very funny, but I was like, \u2018Okay, it\u2019s all right, just see the movie.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tJohnson also talked about the significance of a live-action adaptation of the movie and some of the initial pushback he received about a reboot coming just a decade after the original film was released in 2016.<br \/>\u201cIt\u2019s real flesh and blood, it\u2019s real human beings,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen we first started\u2026there were a few folks who said, it was this ideology of, oh, you got to give it more time, and I thought, \u2018OK, I get that, but at the same time, there\u2019s values in this version that should be shown by real human beings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThomas Kail, who helmed the theatrical release of \u201cHamilton\u201d for Disney, directed the live-action \u201cMoana.\u201d Catherine Laga\u2019aia stars alongside Johnson in the titular role. Other cast members include John Tui, Frankie Adams, Rena Owen and Jemaine Clement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cMoana,\u201d both at the box office and in the home, is one of Disney\u2019s best-performing franchises. The first film, which went on to earn $643 million worldwide after its 2016 release, is one of the most-watched titles on Disney+. Its 2024 sequel, which was cobbled together using a scrapped made-for-streaming \u201cMoana\u201d TV show, had the best gross over a Thanksgiving weekend ever with $225 million. It went on to do just over $1 billion worldwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tUnsurprisingly, a \u201cMoana 3\u201d is in the works, <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/news\/moana-3-disney-1236235124\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as confirmed by Johnson<\/a> at a recent press conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He said, \u201cYes, we have talked about \u2018Moana 3,\u2019 yes. But first, live-action \u2018Moana,\u2019 we\u2019ll let that come out first.
