Shredded iceberg lettuce sourced from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/taylor-farms-food-safety-problems-now-s-linked-another-outbreak-rcna588056\" target=\"_blank\">Taylor Farms de Mexico<\/a> is the likely source, the Food and Drug Administration said last week. The company voluntarily recalled the product from the U.S. market.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-35f121\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWe know it went to many states, to many points of sale,\u201d said Kari Irvin, deputy director of FDA\u2019s Coordinated Outbreak Response and Evaluation Network. The FDA watches the CDC\u2019s confirmed case counts closely, she said, \u201cbecause it will help tell us if the recall is enough, that they\u2019ve recovered all products that need to be removed from the market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-fdc1b2\" class=\"body-graf\">The clue that linked cases to Taylor Farms came from interviews with people who got sick. Many said they\u2019d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/fda-names-source-cyclosporiasis-outbreak-rcna587899\" target=\"_blank\">eaten at Taco Bell<\/a> in June, before the waves of cases took off. The restaurant chain pulled lettuce from its menu ahead of the recall from Taylor Farms.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-115138\" class=\"body-graf\">Irvin said FDA investigators are working to determine whether <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/rfk-jr-says-cyclosporiasis-outbreak-control-mexico-casts-doubt-link-ta-rcna588604\" target=\"_blank\">additional growers<\/a> might have played a role. \u201cThe data that we have now really continues to home in on growers that were already identified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-6a396b\" class=\"body-graf\">The outbreak expanding to four more states was first reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2026\/07\/24\/cdc-expands-largest-known-us-cyclospora-outbreak-9-states\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Washington Post<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-322b28\" class=\"body-graf\">Cyclosporiasis is a foodborne infection caused by a parasite that likes to cling to fresh produce, including fruit, vegetables and herbs, making them difficult to wash away. The parasite, called cyclospora, spreads through water contaminated with human feces. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4d2ece\" class=\"body-graf\">Iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/lettuce-may-tip-iceberg-cyclosporiasis-spreads-rcna588801\" target=\"_blank\">unlikely to be the only product<\/a> making people sick. There are nearly 12,000 confirmed or suspected cases of the illness nationwide, according to tallies from the CDC and state health departments. Michigan has had the brunt of cases, with nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/mdhhs\/keep-mi-healthy\/infectious-diseases\/infectious-disease-outbreaks\" target=\"_blank\">8,000 <\/a>infections. The CDC has sent three staffers to <a href=\"https:\/\/data.ohio.gov\/wps\/portal\/gov\/data\/view\/summary-of-infectious-diseases-in-ohio\" target=\"_blank\">Ohio<\/a>, which has 2,596 cases, to help with that state\u2019s investigation. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-e3ec45\" class=\"body-graf\">Hundreds of other cases have been reported in states not linked so far to the multistate outbreaks. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-dcc1ce\" class=\"body-graf\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.ny.gov\/diseases\/communicable\/cyclosporiasis\/\" target=\"_blank\">New York<\/a> has had 632 cases since May, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dph.ncdhhs.gov\/blog\/2026\/07\/14\/cyclosporiasis-north-carolina-what-it-and-how-stay-safe\" target=\"_blank\">North Carolina<\/a> has reported 561 during the same time frame.
