{"id":15797,"date":"2026-07-24T15:05:44","date_gmt":"2026-07-24T10:05:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=15797"},"modified":"2026-07-24T15:05:44","modified_gmt":"2026-07-24T10:05:44","slug":"alaska-sends-3000-letters-asking-voters-to-verify-their-citizenship-ahead-of-this-years-elections-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=15797","title":{"rendered":"Alaska sends 3,000 letters asking voters to verify their citizenship ahead of this year\u2019s elections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/twt-thumbs.washtimes.com\/media\/image\/2026\/07\/23\/Election_2_26_Alaska_Citizenship__932_s1440x960.jpg?f72536d07237fdd262042ae8f5e6e6de3b865f3c\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>JUNEAU, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/alaska\/\">Alaska<\/a> \u2014 The state has sent more than 3,000 letters to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/alaska\/\">Alaska<\/a> voters asking them to verify their citizenship ahead of the Aug. 18 primary, a number a top state elections official said is unusually high.<\/p>\n<p>The letters have raised concerns among some state lawmakers, including one who said some constituents who received them are U.S. citizens.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/alaska\/\">Alaska<\/a> Division of Elections Director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/carol-beecher\/\">Carol Beecher<\/a> told state lawmakers during a hearing this week that it appears \u201ca lot of old data was picked up somehow\u201d when the division conducted voter roll maintenance that compares its list with information held by the Division of Motor Vehicles. The process usually yields about 200 names for further review, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Beecher estimated during Wednesday\u2019s hearing that the number of letters sent was around 3,500, but a division spokesperson, Steve Kirch, on Thursday said the total was 3,048.<\/p>\n<p>The revelation comes at a time of heightened sensitivity surrounding claims of non-citizen voting. Research and prosecutions have shown it to be extremely rare, but President Donald Trump and his allies have raised alarms since the presidential election cycle two years ago that non-citizen voting is widespread.<\/p>\n<p>The president also has been trying to push voting changes through Congress that would require people to provide documents proving their citizenship to register to vote and a now-halted executive order that sought to create a federal list of verified voters, even though voter rolls are maintained by the states.<\/p>\n<h3>Citizenship verification \u2019is not disenfranchising\u2019 voters<\/h3>\n<aside>\n<\/aside>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/alaska\/\">Alaska<\/a> letter asks recipients to affirm their citizenship via letter, phone or email, and Beecher said the division is not requiring paperwork or documentation. Those who receive the letter are moved to a list of \u201cinactive\u201d voters. If the division doesn\u2019t hear back from the recipient, they still would be able to cast a special kind of ballot that also requires voters to attest to their qualifications to vote, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not disenfranchising the individual from being able to vote, but it\u2019s a measure the division has to take to make sure that we only have citizens voting,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>People who respond to the letter to say they are citizens will be moved back to the active list, Kirch said.<\/p>\n<p>State Rep. Andrew Gray, a Democrat, said the only people who had contacted his office about the letters were people who are citizens. Another Democrat, state Rep. Ashley Carrick, asked if the letters were related to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/alaska\/\">Alaska\u2019s<\/a> decision late last year to share detailed data about the state\u2019s voters with the U.S. Department of Justice.<\/p>\n<p>Beecher said it was not: \u201cIt has nothing to do with that,\u201d she said, adding: \u201cThe information that we have received is specifically from DMV.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said the Division of Elections has not heard from the Department of Justice \u201cregarding any list or the list that we provided that they identified non-citizens on that.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>DMV says request it received was \u2018non-routine\u2019<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/alaska\/\">Alaska<\/a> was one of at least 16 states that have provided or said it would provide to the Trump administration detailed information about its voters &#8211; including dates of birth, driver\u2019s license numbers and partial Social Security numbers, according to the Brennan Center. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/alaska\/\">Alaska<\/a> and Texas also signed agreements. The information is being run through a Department of Homeland Security program that checks for citizenship but has been criticized for its potential to flag eligible voters.<\/p>\n<p>Voting and civil rights groups in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/alaska\/\">Alaska<\/a> earlier this year sued over the state\u2019s sharing of the information. That case is still pending.<\/p>\n<p>In response to questions, the Division of Motor Vehicles released a memo Thursday saying the Division of Elections in March provided the agency \u201cwith a list of approximately 15,200 DMV license and identification applicants and requested that DMV provide citizenship information for these records.\u201d The memo described it as a \u201cnon-routine request.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The memo said the Division of Elections followed up in June, seeking clarification. The DMV said it responded to say that data it provided \u201cincluded only those records where DMV\u2019s latest confirmed status for an individual was something other than \u2018Citizen.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kirch said his agency had sent the DMV its \u201centire voter list and they ran ours against theirs.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Officials unsure why so many voters had their status questioned<\/h3>\n<p>Beecher, during the legislative hearing, said it remained unclear why the list of voters identified as potential non-citizens was so large this time. It\u2019s possible people registered to vote after they became citizens and that data in their DMV files still showed them to be naturalized citizens, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe that people probably don\u2019t realize that all of these governmental entities don\u2019t necessarily talk to each other,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Kirch gave an example on Thursday.
