The deputy then attempted a cover-up.<\/p>\n<p>The former deputy, Jeremiah Manuyag Flores, 45, of La Jolla, was sentenced on Tuesday  to four years and nine months in prison for the incident that occurred in August 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The victim lay in a pool of his own blood for more than two hours before being found by another deputy. In a report that Flores was directed to fill out about his interactions with the detainee, referred to in court documents as J.P., the defendant made \u201cmultiple false statements, including, \u2018no force was used,\u2019\u201d  prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<p>A still shot from a surveillance camera showed Flores walking away from the detainee\u2019s cell after the incident with a smile on his face. During Flores\u2019 sentencing, U.S. District Judge Linda Lopez said, \u201cI don\u2019t know how many years it\u2019s going to be before I get that photo out of my mind. Your conduct was egregious.\u201d <\/p>\n<p> In a federal investigation, Flores was charged with the deprivation of rights under color of law and falsification of records. He was found guilty in December 2025 on both counts by a jury after just two hours of deliberations, according to the U.S. attorney\u2019s office for the Southern District of California.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, theSheriff\u2019s Office condemned the actions of its former deputy, saying that \u201chis actions do not reflect the values of our organization\u201d and that \u201cour agency does not tolerate the use of excessive force or lying by deputies.\u201d The department said that, as a result of an internal investigation, Flores was effectively terminated from his role at the department on June 9. <\/p>\n<p>Because of the convictions, Flores will no longer be eligible to work for law enforcement at any level, including local, state and federal agencies.<\/p>\n<p>Flores, who had been out of jail on bond, was ordered to begin his prison sentence on Aug. 18.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<script async=\"async\" data-cfasync=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/pl30214220.effectivecpmnetwork.com\/9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<div id=\"container-9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\"><\/div>\r\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A San Diego County Sheriff\u2019s Office then-deputy shoved a pretrial detainee from behind while his legs were shackled and his hands chained at the waist, causing the man to \u201cfly across his holding cell, headfirst into the far wall and collapse to the ground,\u201d according to prosecutors.
