In other words, there was no universally accepted chemical formula for each peptide, making it extremely difficult for the FDA to evaluate its use. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f9386a\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWe\u2019ve never faced a problem of, \u2018What is it?\u2019\u201d Russell Wesdyk, an FDA official, told the panel Thursday morning. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-1ce5ec\" class=\"body-graf\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/peptides-are-surging-popularity-little-evidence-work-rcna265519\" target=\"_blank\">Peptides have surged in popularity<\/a> in recent years, touted by the wellness industry as well as high-profile figures including Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and podcaster Joe Rogan. The compounds are promoted for a variety of uses, from anti-aging benefits to better sleep and faster healing. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0ae910\" class=\"body-graf\">However, the peptides have largely existed in a \u201cgray market\u201d \u2014 they are not FDA-approved drugs but are often bought online from vendors who label them \u201cfor research use only,\u201d a legal workaround to sell compounds they claim aren\u2019t meant for humans. Allowing the peptides to be compounded, Kennedy has argued, would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/rfk-jr-wants-make-easier-get-peptides-fda-scientists-disagree-rcna352323\" target=\"_blank\">move people away from the gray market<\/a> and toward safer products.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-3678f4\" class=\"body-graf\">On Thursday, the FDA\u2019s Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee voted in favor of four peptides: BPC-157, KPV, TB-500 and MOTS-c. On Friday, the committee will look at emideltide, epitalon and semax. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-bc1657\" class=\"body-graf\">The committee\u2019s votes do not make the peptides FDA-approved drugs. Instead, they are recommending that the peptides be added to a list of drugs that compounding pharmacies are allowed to make. The final decision will come from the FDA in the form of a rule proposal.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-fc3d74\" class=\"body-graf\">Eight panel members were appointed under Kennedy, including six who run clinics that offer peptides. One committee member, Tennessee state Sen. Bobby Harshbarger, is the son of Rep. Diana Harshbarger, R-Tenn., who last year <a href=\"https:\/\/a4pc.org\/hubfs\/PDFs\/2025-11-10_Harshbarger-Letter-to-HHS-Peptides.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">wrote to Kennedy<\/a>, asking that compounders be allowed to make certain peptides.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-deaa52\" class=\"body-graf\">For the peptides BPC-157, KPV and TB-500, all eight of the new appointees voted yes. Another six members voted no, and one person abstained. For MOTS-c, seven of the new appointees voted yes, five people voted no and two, including one of the new appointees, abstained. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-3b31e9\" class=\"body-graf\">The FDA scientists reviewed the peptides for specific uses: BPC-157 for ulcerative colitis, KPV for wound healing and inflammatory conditions, TB-500 for wound healing, and MOTS-c for obesity and osteoporosis.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-7219aa\" class=\"body-graf\">But during a public comment period ahead of each peptide presentation, proponents of the compounds offered what they said was additional data for other uses. That data wasn\u2019t always included in the FDA scientists\u2019 presentations \u2014 a decision that rankled some committee members. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-250c92\" class=\"body-graf\">Wesdyk defended the process, saying scientists reviewed everything that came in by the deadline. \u201cThere\u2019s no attempt to conceal anything or not use something,\u201d he said, adding that the agency would continue to evaluate new data.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d11bfc\" class=\"body-graf\">But at several points throughout the day, the FDA scientists said that there was simply no data for them to assess for certain peptides. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0d795d\" class=\"body-graf\">During a discussion about KPV, Josh Mailman, president of the Neuroendocrine Tumor Research Foundation board of directors, said, \u201cI\u2019m voting on something here, but I don\u2019t know what that something is. It\u2019s kind of like a black box to me.\u201d Mailman voted no. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-186391\" class=\"body-graf\">A lack of data didn\u2019t necessarily dissuade committee members from recommending the peptides. Dr. Gabriel Alizaidy, a clinical researcher at online clinic Maximus, which offers peptides, said he voted in favor of BPC-157 because he was \u201cfrankly disappointed at how incomplete the data was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0d92e0\" class=\"body-graf\">Yes votes sometimes echoed common Kennedy talking points. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c3a3ec\" class=\"body-graf\">Dr. Haleem Mohammed, the chief medical officer at Gameday Men\u2019s Health, a men\u2019s health clinic in Florida that offers peptides, said he voted yes for BPC-157 \u201cfor patient safety, you know, the greater good and medical freedom.\u201d <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4cad5b\" class=\"body-graf\">Earlier in the day, he cited concerns about the gray market. \u201cAs a physician, I have to make sure that I\u2019m keeping patients as safe as possible,\u201d Mohammed said. \u201cSo when I look at something like saying no to this and pushing it to the gray market, am I doing greater harm? And that\u2019s what I lose sleep at night over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4eb022\" class=\"body-graf\">David Pope, the chief pharmacy officer at Xifin Pharmacy Solutions in Georgia, said his yes vote for BPC-157 was \u201cto put this decision back into the hands of the patient, the physician and the pharmacist.\u201d <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-e9eddc\" class=\"body-graf\">Dr. Brian Lee, an associate professor of medicine at Keck School of Medicine of USC in Los Angeles, voted no, arguing that the public could view the votes \u2014 and FDA sign-off \u2014 as endorsements of the products and that some of the compounds may be no better than a placebo.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f44b39\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cFor effectiveness, we know that 30% of patients on placebo will have a self-reported response or even objective response,\u201d Lee said. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b5d38a\" class=\"body-graf\">Others questioned why they were being asked to review the peptides at all. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c8b495\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cI\u2019m concerned that we\u2019re responding to a market-induced demand rather than a decision based on solid science,\u201d Dr. Elizabeth Rebello, an anesthesiologist at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, said about her no vote on KPV.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a55731\" class=\"endmark body-graf\">\u201cI\u2019m also concerned with the argument that patients are getting it anyway,\u201d Rebello said after a later vote on TB-500. \u201cThat actually goes against the hippocratic oath, which is do no harm and if we don\u2019t know if we\u2019re causing harm, that\u2019s an issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<script async=\"async\" data-cfasync=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/pl30214220.effectivecpmnetwork.com\/9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<div id=\"container-9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\"><\/div>\r\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Food and Drug Administration advisory committee narrowly voted in favor of loosening restrictions on peptides over strong objections from agency career scientists.
