The injectables are popular among wellness influencers and some doctors, who say they improve muscle recovery, reduce inflammation, promote longevity or simply boost your overall health.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtkh000j3b6reshqxafc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The meeting offers a glimpse into how the second Trump administration\u2019s drug regulators could respond to the rapidly expanding popularity of peptides that have not been FDA-approved.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtkg00033b6rgqmnk7fn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The FDA\u2019s Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee (PCAC) is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/advisory-committees\/advisory-committee-calendar\/july-23-24-2026-meeting-pharmacy-compounding-advisory-committee-07232026\" target=\"_blank\">meeting Thursday and Friday<\/a> to review some of the controversial, popular peptide injections and discuss whether compounding pharmacies should be able to dispense them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrwanbqm00023b6wk2u0o7jv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Previous FDA panels have largely been composed of academics and researchers. In contrast, under the second Trump administration, the current committee is made up mainly of health professionals who prescribe, produce or promote peptides.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtkg00053b6rul9oqobg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has said he\u2019s \u201ca big fan of peptides\u201d and has used them himself. He\u2019s also said he hopes to relax restrictions around them but has been faced with some resistance within the FDA, which previously determined that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/human-drug-compounding\/certain-bulk-drug-substances-use-compounding-may-present-significant-safety-risks\" target=\"_blank\">some peptides<\/a> lack sufficient safety data.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrpaj36e00363b6rwhbdwryh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This week\u2019s advisory committee meeting represents a pivotal moment in determining whether some of these peptides move closer to mainstream medical practice or remain largely outside it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtkg000d3b6rj6hh28fd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Over the course of the two-day meeting, the committee is<strong> <\/strong>set to review seven peptides that have been nominated for inclusion on the FDA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/human-drug-compounding\/bulk-drug-substances-used-compounding-under-section-503a-fdc-act\" target=\"_blank\">503A Bulks List<\/a>, a list of ingredients that compounding pharmacies may use to prepare customized medications for people under specific legal conditions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtkg00063b6rw29hf1vy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/advisory-committees\/advisory-committee-calendar\/july-23-24-2026-meeting-pharmacy-compounding-advisory-committee-07232026\" target=\"_blank\">briefing documents<\/a> for the meeting, the FDA\u2019s experts say there is a lack of evidence on effectiveness and safety to justify letting pharmacies make the peptides that the panel will review. Across the board, they propose not adding the peptides to the 503A Bulks List.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrxsntz0000a3b6waid510mp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Although the committee\u2019s recommendations often carry significant weight in the FDA\u2019s decision-making, they are advisory rather than binding. It\u2019s ultimately up to the agency to decide whether to follow the recommendations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrxsl6hn00033b6wppjf8w5r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The committee\u2019s first vote was far from unanimous but signaled narrow support for adding forms of the peptide BPC-157 to the compounding list.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrxsispc00013b6wpweifa3g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The committee voted 8-6 to place a form of BPC-157 known as \u201cfree base\u201d on the list. The panel also voted 8-6 to place another form known as \u201cacetate\u201d on the list. In both votes, a committee member abstained.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrxsmyjn00053b6wfrvo2yd4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Before the vote, the committee discussed the use of the peptide for the treatment of ulcerative colitis, a common type of inflammatory bowel disease that can cause inflammation and ulcers in the colon. But some people and facilities, such as med spas and clinics, claim that BPC-157 also may help support muscle and joint health and cellular wellness, and accelerate the healing of injuries and wounds, and offer them as capsules, injections and sprays.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrxsmzuy00073b6wdma7729v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Within a 68-page briefing document for the committee meeting, the FDA\u2019s own experts wrote that \u201cthere is a lack of evidence to make a conclusion on the effectiveness of BPC-157\u201d for treating ulcerative colitis and there already are FDA-approved drugs available to treat ulcerative colitis, and they proposed not adding BPC-157 to the 503A Bulks List.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrxsmzuy00083b6w3ls42ic8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The briefing document also notes that the compound has become so popular that there are more than 50 million \u201cBPC-157\u201d-tagged video views on both YouTube and TikTok, with over 100,000 members in peptide-related Reddit communities.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtkh000l3b6rqy9oh5lf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Peptides are short chains of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. Some have become important prescription medicines. Insulin, for example, is a peptide, as are widely used GLP-1 medications for diabetes and obesity such as Ozempic and Wegovy. Often, they might have labels that say \u201cresearch use only\u201d or \u201cnot for human consumption.\u201d Many people have accessed these peptides online, sometimes from unknown sources, without ever consulting a doctor. And most peptides are administrated by injection.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtkh000o3b6rco4pgqct@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Supporters of peptides argue that allowing FDA-regulated compounding pharmacies to prepare these medications with a prescription would provide a safer alternative to ordering products online from unregulated internet vendors.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrwh6uhi00023b6w90078gxx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Critics counter that moving the compounds into legitimate pharmacies could create the appearance that they have been proved safe and effective when, in many cases, data from robust clinical trials remains limited. That tension lies at the heart of the upcoming meeting.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtkh000g3b6rkovf5a0o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The peptides under consideration this week are:\n    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/list\/instances\/cmrp5rtkh000h3b6rwfxk1c9t@published\" class=\"list-elevate vossi-list_elevate\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<ul data-editable=\"items\" class=\"list__items list__items--ul vossi-list_elevate__items vossi-list_elevate__items--ul\">\n<li data-editable=\"items.0.text\" class=\"list__item vossi-list_elevate__item inline-placeholder\">\n        <span class=\"list__text vossi-list_elevate__text \"><br \/>\n            BPC-157, proposed for treating ulcerative colitis<br \/>\n        <\/span>\n      <\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.1.text\" class=\"list__item vossi-list_elevate__item inline-placeholder\">\n        <span class=\"list__text vossi-list_elevate__text \"><br \/>\n            KPV for wound healing and inflammatory conditions<br \/>\n        <\/span>\n      <\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.2.text\" class=\"list__item vossi-list_elevate__item inline-placeholder\">\n        <span class=\"list__text vossi-list_elevate__text \"><br \/>\n            TB-500 for wound healing<br \/>\n        <\/span>\n      <\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.3.text\" class=\"list__item vossi-list_elevate__item inline-placeholder\">\n        <span class=\"list__text vossi-list_elevate__text \"><br \/>\n            MOTs-C for obesity and osteoporosis<br \/>\n        <\/span>\n      <\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.4.text\" class=\"list__item vossi-list_elevate__item inline-placeholder\">\n        <span class=\"list__text vossi-list_elevate__text \"><br \/>\n            Emideltide for opioid withdrawal, chronic insomnia and narcolepsy<br \/>\n        <\/span>\n      <\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.5.text\" class=\"list__item vossi-list_elevate__item inline-placeholder\">\n        <span class=\"list__text vossi-list_elevate__text \"><br \/>\n            Semax for certain neurological disorders<br \/>\n        <\/span>\n      <\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.6.text\" class=\"list__item vossi-list_elevate__item inline-placeholder\">\n        <span class=\"list__text vossi-list_elevate__text \"><br \/>\n            Epitalon for insomnia<br \/>\n        <\/span>\n      <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp9nm7n002y3b6r0p51qpy0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The FDA advisory committee \u201cwill be determining whether or not it will allow access to these substances through legitimate state-licensed compounding pharmacies,\u201d said Scott Brunner, chief executive officer of the Alliance for Pharmacy Compounding, who <a href=\"https:\/\/join.a4pc.org\/hubfs\/PDFs\/2026-07-09_APC-PCAC-Letter-Peptides.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">sent a public letter to the committee<\/a> in support of adding peptides to the list.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtkg00073b6rdiqwjv4l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, he added that since many of these experimental peptides don\u2019t have the same robust catalog of clinical trial data as FDA-approved medications, evaluating them for the 503A Bulks List may prove challenging for the committee and the agency.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtkg00083b6rz0100xm2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe committee usually looks at research clinical trials, and if there\u2019s supporting research clinical trial data, there\u2019ll be a recommendation that they be added to a list of drugs that compounding pharmacies can prepare. That data just doesn\u2019t exist for most of these peptides,\u201d Brunner said. \u201cAnd so FDA is going to need to use a different lens.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtkg000a3b6r6xxt5hck@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Unlike FDA approval of a new drug, which requires years of clinical trials demonstrating safety and effectiveness, placement on the 503A Bulks List answers a different regulatory question. It is evaluating whether a drug meets certain criteria, allowing pharmacists to compound it from bulk ingredients for patients with valid prescriptions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtkg000b3b6r9584gkfo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cEssentially, what that would do is it would create a lawful pathway for compounding pharmacies to be able to make products containing these ingredients and dispense them to patients,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frierlevitt.com\/attorney\/jesse-c-dresser\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jesse Dresser<\/a>, a partner in the law firm Frier Levitt\u2019s Life Sciences Department and head of the firm\u2019s Pharmacy Practice Group.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtkg000c3b6rvqdzn23p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That means, \u201cif you\u2019re going to get these products, you have to be seen by a physician, you have to have a prescription written, and then you have to go get it from a licensed 503A compounding pharmacy,\u201d Dresser said. \u201cAnd so it remains to be seen what ultimately happens at this meeting.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtkh000q3b6rfqhuddrp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Three years ago, the FDA determined that certain peptides should not be compounded, citing significant safety concerns, including the risk of life-threatening allergic reactions. This week\u2019s meeting revisits the discussion.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrpa3exw00323b6roz9mnpd4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some experts worry that broader availability to certain peptides through compounding pharmacies could expose larger numbers of patients to therapies whose long-term safety profiles remain unclear.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtkh000r3b6rm8lp8p4x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe currently don\u2019t know the long-term effects of many of these peptides; what are their toxicities, adverse effects or even their drug interactions. FDA approval \u2013 Phase 1, 2 and 3 clinical trials \u2013 require companies to perform extensive clinical studies to determine drug safety and efficacy. None of the peptides currently being considered for compounding are FDA approved drugs,\u201d said Edgar Asebey, a life science attorney and partner at the Frier Levitt law firm who heads the FDA Practice Group.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtki001j3b6ri0aermhg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dr. Castel Santana, regional medical director at 10X Health, a health and wellness company that offers peptides, said that he feels confident that most peptides have \u201cminimal or low\u201d associated risk based on his personal experiences prescribing them. But he warns that taking several peptides all at once could lead to interactions between them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtki001k3b6rojoy8e83@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe fact is that there are some contradictions to it,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrpbsy5p003y3b6rw4hxk5xi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Santana added that he is \u201chappy\u201d the FDA advisory committee is meeting to discuss peptides.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrwd343x00003b6wbt2or592@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But not all doctors may agree.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtkh000v3b6r9w10cqf9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When it comes to the meeting, \u201cI think this is a disaster in the works, because these peptides have no data to support their safety and efficacy,\u201d Dr. Eric Topol, a research methods expert and director of Scripps Research Translational Institute, said in April during a call with reporters hosted by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtki000z3b6rtbpjpjza@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ultimately,<strong> <\/strong>some experts say that how safe certain peptides are remains unknown without clinical trial data, and the safety could vary based on the substance.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtki00123b6r1nkaw77m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            FDA-approved peptides are regulated in the same way as other approved drugs. But aside from those that are approved as therapeutic medications, the manufacturing of certain peptides is largely unregulated. Many are not eligible to be dispensed by compounding pharmacies, and experts warn that rising demand is fueling an unregulated online market that could be dangerous.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtki00133b6rqxxuy3v9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cPatients are getting what purport to be these substances, or are using drugs that are made with research-grade active ingredients, and I almost expect any day now there\u2019s going to be some serious patient adverse event or a series of patients who are made ill or worse by taking batches of these drugs that were not made to FDA standards or with active ingredients that are not made to FDA standards,\u201d Brunner said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtki00143b6rqii09567@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To combat the risky online market, Brunner said, the Alliance for Pharmacy Compounding hopes that the advisory committee<strong> <\/strong>will recommend the peptides for pharmacy compounding, which could create a \u201csafer\u201d pathway for access.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtki00153b6rwywymkie@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Additionally, \u201cFDA should create a green list of authorized FDA-registered manufacturers of these substances,\u201d Brunner said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtki00163b6rdkn9hcst@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe would argue that pharmacies should only be able to access the active ingredient from FDA-registered wholesalers. We believe that it is reasonable to require an enhanced disclosure to the patient who may be prescribed one of these drugs that this molecule is not as well-characterized as drugs that would normally be dispensed to patients, and the patient needs to understand that there may be a higher risk profile, and they should only be taken under the care of a physician,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd we believe there is a place for mandatory serious adverse events reporting related to these substances.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtki001a3b6rv9hryos0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If the FDA ultimately permits compounding some of these peptides, patients may find it easier to get them through licensed compounding pharmacies instead of relying on unregulated sources. Physicians may become more comfortable prescribing them. Compounding pharmacies could see significant new business.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtki001b3b6rz4q28d55@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Since there are no FDA-approved versions of these peptides, compounding pharmacies could be the only pathway through which people could access these medications in the future, said Dresser, who has represented a number of compounding pharmacies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtki001c3b6riao0py2p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBy the same token, because there is not an FDA-approved version out there, there\u2019s no competition risk. There\u2019s no limitation on their ability to produce any particular formulation,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s really just related to whether or not they can get a prescription from a prescriber.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtki001d3b6rjp8jb7xz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The future of regulations around peptides may also somewhat mirror how dietary supplements are currently regulated, suggested Dr. Janet Woodcock, a retired FDA veteran and former principal deputy commissioner.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrp5rtki001e3b6rcgjvvmys@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cDietary supplements are oral, but they have the same sort of regulatory scheme as the compounded drugs, in the sense that FDA can only intervene in them if they cause harm, as demonstrated,\u201d Woodcock said. \u201cThey don\u2019t have to have tests or clinical trials or whatever to show they work, but they can\u2019t be harmful, and they can\u2019t make disease claims.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<script async=\"async\" data-cfasync=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/pl30214220.effectivecpmnetwork.com\/9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<div id=\"container-9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\"><\/div>\r\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A little-known advisory group to the US Food and Drug Administration is meeting this week to mull over whether to ease restrictions on certain peptides.
