34% of local income \u2014\u00a0the third-highest burden in the country.<\/p>\n<p>San Diego ranked second worst, with 9.5% of families doubling up, only 10% of listings deemed affordable and 31% of income going toward rent.<\/p>\n<p>The Golden State\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/09\/real-estate\/california-ranked-among-the-worst-states-to-move-to-in-2026\/\">housing misery stretched far beyond Southern California<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>San Jose ranked fourth, followed by San Francisco at No. 5. The Inland Empire tied New York for sixth, while Sacramento landed in eighth place.<\/p>\n<p>Boston, at No. 3, and New York were the only non-California markets among the eight least affordable.<\/p>\n<p>Across the six California metros, just 14% of listings were considered affordable, compared with 35% nationwide.
