Scott Applewhite, File)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Senate Majority Leader <strong>John Thune<\/strong> (R-SD) hit back at the Trump White House on Thursday after press secretary <strong>Karoline Leavitt<\/strong> told reporters the president\u2019s \u201cpatience is running out\u201d on getting the Save America Act passed.<\/p>\n<p>Thune has long made it clear he does not believe he has the votes in the Senate to pass Trump\u2019s sweeping voter ID bill, which the president has urged Republicans to kill the filibuster in order to get it on his desk.<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Caller\u2019s <strong>Reagan Reese<\/strong> asked Leavitt during Thursday\u2019s press briefing if Trump was frustrated the Save America Act still hasn\u2019t passed the Senate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis patience is running out,\u201d Leavitt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/media\/news\/trumps-patience-is-running-out-with-top-senate-republican-leavitt-warns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">replied<\/a>. \u201cHe wants to see as much of the SAVE America Act passed as possible by the August recess. He knows that\u2019s what the American people want to see passed. He was just traveling on the road yesterday, spoke about this, and there was a very loud applause from the people in the audience, the everyday Americans, because voter ID is common sense. They want proof of citizenship in our elections, and the president feels very strongly about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe American people elected overwhelmingly Republicans to not just this White House, but also the House and the Senate,\u201d Leavitt concluded, adding, \u201cThe House did its job, the Senate needs to do its job too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thune later <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/reaganreese_\/status\/2080336554229215693\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> reporters, \u201cWell maybe [Leavitt] or somebody else ought to get on the phone and get the votes, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s 50 around here, and so instead of, you know, pointing the finger at Republicans, they might think about going after the people who are stopping it on the floor, which is the Democrats, and if there are Republicans that they think are gettable, get on the phone,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Thune has previously swatted down Trump\u2019s claims that he could use a \u201ctalking filibuster\u201d to exhaust Senate Democrats\u2019 opposition to the bill and force a straight majority vote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd obviously, what people don\u2019t realize, I think, is it\u2019s all unlimited debate, but it\u2019s also unlimited amendments. So what I\u2019ve said before is you have to have unified support, not only in support of the ultimate goal, which is the SAVE America Act, on the process to be able to defeat amendments that would undo the legislation the first place.
