In his official comments opening the press conference, he lashed out at the European Commission, which this week withdrew a \u20ac2 million ($2.8 million) grant earmarked for the La Biennale di Venezia Foundation. The EC took the move to punish Venice\u2019s art Biennale for allowing Russia to return to the event this year, for first time since the start of the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tComparing the European Commission to a \u201cwolf\u201d and Venice to a \u201clamb,\u201d Buttafuoco said Brussels were\u201d abandoning us\u2026because of a political decision, not a legal decision, and certainly not a cultural decision.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBarbara began with the line up for the Venice Spotlight, including <em>Conversation With the Sea<\/em> from Palestinian director Muayad Alayan, and <em>Hombre Al Agua<\/em> from Mexican star Gael Garcia Bernal. The Spotlight line up looks like a particularly political one this year, with other highlights including <em>Ground Floo<\/em>r from Hungarian director Gabor Reisz, which Barbara described as a metaphor for the Victor Orban \u201cdictatorship;\u201d and <em>I Matter<\/em>, from director Alina Serban, the first film from a Roma director to screen in the section.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAmong the highlights of Venice\u2019s main sidebar, the Orizzonti or Horizons section, include <em>Lovers in the Blue Night<\/em>, the new film from India\u2019s Anuparna Roy, whose <em>Songs of Forgotten Trees<\/em> won best director in the section last year; and <em>Too Much Sugar<\/em>, the new documentary from <em>Procession<\/em> director Robert Greene.<\/p>\n<p>Among the highlights of Venice\u2019s main sidebar, the Orizzonti or Horizons section, include <em>Lovers in the Blue Night<\/em>, the new film from India\u2019s Anuparna Roy, whose <em>Songs of Forgotten Trees<\/em> won best director in the section last year; and <em>Too Much Sugar<\/em>, the new documentary from <em>Procession<\/em> director Robert Greene.<\/p>\n<p>Another new section, the Venice Open Non Fiction sidebar for documentary films, will see the world premiere of several of this year\u2019s most hotly-anticipated docs, including Alex Gibney\u2019s Elon Musk documentary <em>Musk<\/em>, <em>My Undesirable Friends Part II \u2013 Exile<\/em>, Julia Loktev\u2019s follow-up to her 2025 film tracing Russia\u2019s crack down on independent journalists; and <em>Union Town<\/em>, from two-time Oscar winner Barbara Kopple (<em>Harlan County U.S.A.<\/em>, <em>American Dream<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tVenice has already confirmed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/venice-2026-closing-film-giovanni-veronesi-dio-ride-1236650776\/\">Danny Boyle\u2019s <em>Ink<\/em><\/a>, a biographical drama starring Jack O\u2019Connell, Guy Pearce and Claire Foy, about Rupert Murdoch and his British tabloid empire, will open this year\u2019s event, on Sept. 2. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/venice-2026-closing-film-giovanni-veronesi-dio-ride-1236650776\/\">Dio Ride<\/a><\/em>, an Italian period drama from director Giovanni Veronesi starring Pierfrancesco Favino (<em>Maria<\/em>, <em>Rush<\/em>) will close the fest on Sept. 12, screening out of competition. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tLegendary German director Werner Herzog, whose documentary <em>Ghost Elephants<\/em> screened out of competition in Venice last year, arrives in the main selection this year with <em>Bucking Fastard<\/em>. Herzog reportedly turned down an out-of-competition slot in Cannes for his new feature, which stars siblings Rooney and Kate Mara in their first on-screen collaboration. Orlando Bloom and Domhnall Gleeson co-star. Hanway Films is selling <em>Bucking Fastard <\/em>worldwide and is still hunting for a domestic distributor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDanish director May el-Toukhy (<em>Queen of Hearts<\/em>) will make her Venice debut with <em>Woman Unknown. <\/em>The period drama stars Mathilde Arcel as Marie, a young nanny and housemaid who is set to marry her boss, the wealthy older widower, Christian (Carsten Bj\u00f8rnlund). But Marie\u2019s past \u2014 her shameful affair with a German soldier during occupation \u2014 threatens to catch up with her. TrustNordisk is handling world sales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAlso in competition for the Golden Lion this year are Casey Affleck\u2019s 1970s-set gothic mystery <em>Company <\/em>starring Nick Nolte and Ben Mendelsohn, and <em>A Bit of Light<\/em> from Iranian director Ali Asgari.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAmong the titles screening out of competition are <em>Place to Be <\/em>from Hungarian director Kornel Mundruczo (<em>Pieces of a Woman<\/em>) with Ellen Burstyn, Taika Waititi and Pamela Anderson; <em>Let Us Through, Dear Ancestors<\/em>, the latest from Filipino auteur Lav Diaz (<em>Season of the Devil<\/em>); Paul Schrader\u2019s new film, <em>The Basics of Philosophy<\/em>; and the Luc Besson-produced crime thriller <em>Father Joe<\/em>, from director Barthelemy Grossman starring Kiefer Sutherland and Al Pacino.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/maggie-gyllenhaal-directing-acting-independence-day-gaza-1236637531\/\">Maggie Gyllenhaal<\/a>\u00a0(<em>The Lost Daughter, The Bride!<\/em>) will head up this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/maggie-gyllenhaal-venice-film-festival-2026-jury-president-1236572808\/\">Venice competition jury<\/a> as president, picking the winner of the Golden Lion for best film. George Clooney, a Lido regular, will receive an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/george-clooney-venice-festival-golden-lion-1236638569\/\">honorary Golden Lion lifetime achievement award<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tLast year\u2019s Biennale included several high-profile premieres, though many \u2014\u00a0Benny Safdie\u2019s <em>The Smashing Machine<\/em>, Noah Baumbach\u2019s <em>Jay Kelly<\/em>, Kathryn Bigelow\u2019s <em>A House of Dynamite<\/em> \u2014\u00a0were award season flops.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe only 2025 Venice title to score at the Oscars was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/frankenstein-review-oscar-isaac-jacob-elordi-netflix-1236351926\/\">Guillermo del Toro\u2019s <em>Frankenstein<\/em><\/a>, which picked up 9 Academy Award nominations, winning three, for Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/bugonia-review-emma-stone-jesse-plemons-yorgos-lanthimos-1236355544\/\">Bugonia<\/a><\/em>, from Yorgos Lanthimos, another Venice world premiere, picked up three Oscar nominations but won none. Kaouther Ben Hania\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/the-voice-of-hind-rajab-review-kaouther-ben-hania-gripping-drama-1236344683\/\">The Voice of Hind Rajab<\/a><\/em>, which won Venice\u2019s Silver Lion last year, was nominated for Best International Feature but lost out to Joachim Trier\u2019s <em>Sentimental Value<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tEurope\u2019s other big festivals, Cannes and Berlin, struggled this year to attract films from major studios, leading to speculation that the majors are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/why-is-hollywood-ghosting-cannes-2-1236592024\/\">going cold on the festival circuit<\/a>. Barbera has traditionally proven adept at enticing the studios, and Netflix, to premiere their prestige titles on the Lido.
