Directed by Justin Lin and written by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung, <em>Star Trek Beyond<\/em> premiered on July 22, 2016, in the United States, and grossed over $343 million worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- No AdsNinja v10 Client! --><!-- No AdsNinja v10 Client! --><\/p>\n<p>Director J.J. Abrams&#8217; <em>Star Trek <\/em>(2009) reboot stands as the top-grossing<em> Star Trek<\/em> movie at the domestic box office with $257 million. Although far less liked by American audiences, 2013&#8217;s sequel, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/star-trek-into-darkness-ending-problem-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\">Star Trek Into Darkness<\/a><\/em>, was huge internationally and topped its predecessor at the worldwide box office with $467 million to <em>Star Trek <\/em>(2009)&#8217;s $385 million.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, <em>Star Trek Beyond<\/em> marked a downturn at the box office. In this third outing, Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) had, mercifully, matured from the hothead he was in the prior films. Pine&#8217;s Kirk embodied more of William Shatner&#8217;s courage, judgment, and love and respect for his Starship Enterprise crew.<\/p>\n<p>While <em>Star Trek Beyond<\/em> still played by summer blockbuster action movie rules, there was greater character depth, with Spock (Zachary Quinto), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), and Scotty (Simon Pegg) shining, in particular. <em>Star Trek Beyond<\/em> also introduced a winning new alien heroine, <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/star-trek-beyond-jaylah-jennifer-lawrence-inspiration\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jaylah (Sofia Boutella)<\/a>, who seamlessly fit into Captain Kirk&#8217;s crew.<\/p>\n<p><em>Star Trek Beyond<\/em>&#8216;s adherence to <em>Star Trek: Enterprise<\/em>&#8216;s canon, which predated the incident that created J.J. Abrams&#8217; alternate Kelvin Timeline, was the movie&#8217;s most pleasant surprise. <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/star-trek-beyond-idris-elba-krall-movie-villain-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\">Idris Elba&#8217;s mutated alien terror<\/a>, Krall, was revealed to be a human Captain named Balthazar Edison, who was from Captain Jonathan Archer&#8217;s (Scott Bakula) era.<\/p>\n<p>With themes of friendship, reaffirming Kirk&#8217;s dedication to his USS Enterprise crew, and <em>&#8220;finding hope in the impossible,&#8221;<\/em> <em>Star Trek Beyond<\/em> was the clearest and most uplifting embrace of <em>Star Trek<\/em>&#8216;s noble soul in J.J. Abrams&#8217; trilogy. Abrams&#8217; movie cast again.<\/p>\n<section class=\"emaki-custom-block emaki-custom-note\" data-nosnippet=\"\">\n<div class=\"emaki-custom note\" id=\"custom_block_15\">\n<div class=\"custom_block-content note\">\n<p>Anton Yelchin passed away in a tragic accident just weeks before <em>Star Trek Beyond <\/em>premiered in 2016. Out of respect for the beloved young actor, J.J. Abrams declared Chekov would not be recast.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>Years of <em>Star Trek 4 <\/em>development hell then followed. Big-name directors like S.J. Clarkson, Matt Shakman, and even <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/star-trek-tos-episode-quentin-tarantino-movie\/\" target=\"_blank\">Quentin Tarantino took stabs at <em>Star Trek 4<\/em><\/a> before walking away because of <em>&#8220;creative differences.&#8221;<\/em> Abandoned <em>Star Trek 4 <\/em>concepts included Kirk teaming up with his dead father, played by Chris Hemsworth, to Tarantino&#8217;s R-rated gangster remake of a classic <em>Star Trek<\/em> episode.<\/p>\n<p>Despite Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana (now an Academy Award winner), Simon Pegg, and Sofia Boutella all publicly stating that they wanted to return for <em>Star Trek 4<\/em>, Paramount could not get the sequel off the ground. Paramount was then bought by Skydance Media in 2025, and the new studio heads scrapped <em>Star Trek 4<\/em> entirely, ending J.J. Abrams&#8217; franchise for good.<\/p>\n<p>Paramount Skydance announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/new-star-trek-movie-finds-its-writers-directors-in-major-reboot-update\/\" target=\"_blank\">new<em> Star Trek<\/em> movie<\/a> that will not be tied to previous <em>Star Trek<\/em> movies and TV series, but if it happens, it will still be years away from hitting theaters.
