Later that month, Angela accused Michelle of posting photos of her in online ads soliciting men to rape her in Ian\u2019s condo to fulfill a sexual fantasy. She <a href=\"https:\/\/ocdistrictattorney.gov\/press\/remarks-by-the-district-attorney-on-charges-against-angela-diaz-and-exoneration-of-michelle-hadley\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\">told police<\/a> that men had come to her home in response to the ads and claimed that on one occasion, a man had attempted to attack her in her garage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">That July, police arrested Michelle on felony counts of stalking and attempted rape, among other charges. Michelle spent nearly three months in jail until authorities realized that she hadn\u2019t been involved in the <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/3531310\/gender-online-harassment\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"_self\">harassment<\/a> at all. After tracing the IP address for \u201cLilith is Truth,\u201d they found that all of it\u2014the emails, the ads\u2014had actually come from Ian and Angela\u2019s home.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">This strange and layered case is the subject of the <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7019618\/essential-true-crime-documentaries\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"_self\">documentary,<\/a> <em>A Toxic Love Story,<\/em> out July 22 on <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5951774\/new-documentaries-streaming\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"_self\">Netflix<\/a>, which recounts the events that led to uncovering Ian and Angela as the true sources of the harassment. A former U.S. marshal, Diaz was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/archives\/opa\/pr\/former-deputy-us-marshal-sentenced-cyberstalking-perjury-and-obstruction\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\">sentenced<\/a> to 10 years in prison in 2023, for <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/4630876\/rape-fantasy-hoax\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"_self\">framing<\/a> Michelle to make it seem like she was going to harm his then-wife, Angela. Authorities first connected Angela to the emails, and in 2017, she was sentenced to five years in prison for framing Michelle.
