Susan Collins (R-ME) \" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-5744528\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L: Screenshot via Troy Jackson on Facebook; R: Tom Williams\/CQ Roll Call via AP Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Sen. <strong>Susan Collins&#8217;<\/strong> (R-ME) re-election path got a bit more uphill with the exit of <strong>Graham Platner<\/strong>, as a new poll shows the scandal-plagued oyster farmer&#8217;s replacement is a few points ahead of her.<\/p>\n<p>Platner won the Democratic primary to take on Collins for Maine&#8217;s Senate seat, but his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/politics\/breaking-graham-platner-posts-video-saying-hes-suspending-campaign-operations-insists-accusations-are-all-false\/\">campaign<\/a> was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/media\/news\/consultant-who-recruited-platner-was-banned-from-another-dem-campaign-for-multiple-sexual-misconduct-complaints\/\">plagued<\/a> by a staggering series of scandals, including a Nazi <em>Totenkopf<\/em> tattoo he later had covered, offensive Reddit posts, accusations he was sexting women other than his wife, and then, most disturbingly, on-the-record accusations from two of his ex-girlfriends that he had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/politics\/breaking-graham-platner-accused-of-sexual-assault-in-explosive-politico-report\/\">sexually assaulted<\/a> them.<\/p>\n<p>He denied the allegations, but the dam of support for his campaign broke, explosively. Democrats rushed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/politics\/democratic-lawmakers-frantically-jump-ship-on-platner-after-latest-bombshell\/\">revoke their endorsements<\/a>\u00a0and the Maine Democratic Party <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MaineDems\/status\/2074922078319288751?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">urged<\/a> him to step aside. Earlier this month, Platner posted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/politics\/breaking-graham-platner-posts-video-saying-hes-suspending-campaign-operations-insists-accusations-are-all-false\/\">an eleven-minute-long video<\/a> insisting the accusations against him were \u201call false,\u201d bitterly casting blame on the \u201ccorporate media system\u201d and \u201cpolitical establishment,\u201d before announcing he was \u201csuspending campaign operations.\u201d After initially looking like he might drag his feet until the last possible moment (the deadline for him to withdraw and get his name off the ballot was July 13), Platner filed his paperwork with the Maine Secretary of State Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>With Platner stepping aside, the Democratic line on the ballot will be taken by former Maine Senate President <strong>Troy Jackson<\/strong>, who had endorsed Platner for Senate but rescinded that support along with everyone else after the sexual assault stories broke.<\/p>\n<p>The Maine Democratic Party held caucuses around the state over the weekend, and Jackson was the strong favorite, getting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangordailynews.com\/2026\/07\/19\/politics\/elections\/troy-jackson-locks-down-delegates-maine-democratic-senate-nod\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">majority<\/a> of delegates&#8217; votes. The new nomination is not yet official until a party meeting next week but the three other main contenders dropped out after the caucus votes and endorsed Jackson.<\/p>\n<p>That may end up proving to be a wise move for Maine Democrats, as a new poll by the University of New Hampshire &#8212; taken after Platner quit the race &#8212; showed Jackson with a small lead over Collins.<\/p>\n<p>The latest &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/scholars.unh.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1980&amp;context=survey_center_polls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pine Tree State Poll<\/a>&#8221; by the University of New Hampshire&#8217;s States of Opinion project was conducted from July 15 to 20 with 1,236 Maine residents who completed the survey online. The margin of error was +\/- 2.8 percentage points.
