Jean Carroll to return the money<\/h2>\n<p>According to a Tuesday report by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/trump-e-jean-carroll-lawsuit-payment-b3018969.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Independent<\/a>, Donald Trump is seeking an emergency injunction that would order E. Jean Carroll to return the $5.6 million she received from the president two weeks ago. Trump was ordered to pay the amount to Carroll after a federal jury found him liable for sexual abuse and defamation. The money went to Carroll on July 9 from a court-controlled escrow account.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.ca2.e83174e9-e3d3-464a-b268-97492aab624a\/gov.uscourts.ca2.e83174e9-e3d3-464a-b268-97492aab624a.17.0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">legal filing<\/a> on Monday, Carroll\u2019s lawyers wrote, \u201cBut rather than accept the reality that he had lost, [Trump] has engaged in a series of maneuvers trying desperately to forestall payment.\u201d The $5.6 million payment to the former Elle magazine writer \u201cshould have been the end of this case,\u201d her legal team said. However, Trump now wants the money back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Defendant now demands yet another unprecedented remedy. \u2026 The judgment here is final, the money has already been disbursed, and Carroll is entitled to keep it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carroll\u2019s lawyers rejected the president\u2019s request for the injunction, calling it \u201cprocedurally improper, substantively meritless, and yet another example of Defendant\u2019s pattern of \u2018slow-roll[ing] his defenses, asserting or inventing a new one each time his prior effort to delay the case fails.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump made the payment after a New York civil jury found him liable for sexually abusing and defaming Carroll at a Manhattan department store in the 1990s. \u201cDefendant has been stalling this case for years,\u201d Judge Lewis Kaplan <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/trump-now-wants-e-jean-carroll-to-return-the-usd5-6m-he-paid-for-sexual-abuse-and-defamation-12024030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cA jury unanimously concluded that he sexually abused and defamed plaintiff and awarded her damages accordingly.
