I was always just focused on my career \u2013\u00a0I think even relationships took a backseat for me because I\u2019ve been so driven to do what I love, which is performing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It hardly needs saying that her single-mindedness paid off. As the high-kicking, high-ponytailed, permanently tracksuit-clad Sporty Spice, Mel C was one fifth of the biggest girl group of all time. Just 20 years old when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.co.uk\/tags\/spice-girls\">Spice Girls<\/a> formed in 1994, the aspiring pop star\u2019s wildest dreams were realised overnight when their song \u201cWannabe\u201d was released two years later, and promptly became a global phenomenon. Some 30 years on, the band\u2019s run of UK number one hits is still unmatched.<\/p>\n<p><cm-unit\/><\/p>\n<p>Melanie has enjoyed plenty of post-Spice solo success in the intervening years, too, and she\u2019s still making music at 52 (her ninth album, the dance-infused <em>Sweat<\/em>, was released in May). She\u2019s also mum to a teenage daughter, Scarlet, with a former partner. But as for walking down the aisle? \u201cI\u2019d gotten to the point in my life where I just didn\u2019t think it was going to be a part of my story,\u201d she says now. Then, along came Chris Dingwall.<\/p>\n<p><native-ad position=\"in-content\" shoulddisplaylabel=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe spark was immediate,\u201d confirms Melanie, who first connected with the Australian model and producer on Raya. \u201cI was 49 when I met Chris and I was in a really good place. We had a date in Australia, and it\u2019s been difficult to separate us ever since.\u201d Chris has a \u201cvery calming energy\u201d, the singer says. \u201cHe\u2019s been such a beautiful addition to mine and my daughter\u2019s life. Because, you know, I\u2019m a single mum. My daughter is 17, and we\u2019re pretty resilient the two of us, we\u2019re a team. For anybody coming into our world\u2026 it was going to be tough, and he just fits perfectly. It\u2019s a beautiful dynamic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite having found her happily ever after, the idea of marriage still hadn\u2019t occurred to Melanie.
