Smith for the last two years. In fact, Newton had just signed a multi-year extension back in August 2025 to expand his role on the hit show. He was even tapped to take over for Shannon Sharpe as Smith\u2019s main Monday co-host during football season, helping keep the show at its highest-rated day of the week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, what\u2019s behind the big change? According to ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro, the layoffs are a direct result of the network\u2019s recent acquisition of NFL Network.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hollywoodunlocked.com\/espn-cuts-ties-with-nfl-analyst-ryan-clark-in-middle-of-live-show-broadcast-sources-claim-executives-feared-a-leak-and-are-expecting-more-layoffs\/\">RELATED: ESPN Cuts Ties With NFL Analyst Ryan Clark In Middle Of Live Show Broadcast<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOver the past several months, we\u2019ve made significant progress integrating the NFL assets that we acquired through ESPN,\u201d Pitaro said in a memo, per Variety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThroughout this process, we have taken the time to carefully evaluate our collective teams, resources and organizational structures to best position us for the future.
