While network TV procedurals like Hannibal and Criminal Minds were once the cream of the crop when it came to psychological thrillers, the binge-watching model allows Netflix, Apple TV, Prime Video, and HBO Max to outdo these earlier hits.

Netflix has campy entries into the genre like You and The Hunting Wives, but also darker, more haunting acclaimed psychological thrillers like Mindhunter, produced by Zodiac director David Fincher. At the very least, almost all the streaming service’s best entries into the genre undeniably struggle with endings, unsure of whether to tell a standalone self-contained story or leave the door open for a potential follow-up.
