But as much as stores handle and process strawberries and other fresh produce, they still need to be thoroughly washed and cleaned when you bring them home. This is particularly important with cases of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/select\/shopping\/cyclosporiasis-prevention-and-treatments-rcna385888\" target=\"_blank\">cyclosporiasis<\/a> rising in the United States. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-40cc78\" class=\"body-graf\">The illness, which is caused by a parasite (cyclospora) contracted from eating feces found on produce like lettuce, apples and, yes, strawberries, has severe symptoms including digestive issues like diarrhea.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-3e78d3\" class=\"body-graf\">To avoid the risk of cyclosporiasis and to extend the shelf life of strawberries, I spoke to experts, including microbiologists and culinary instructors, to find the best way to clean strawberries and the most effective products to help do it. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/select\/shopping\/how-to-clean-strawberries-rcna588567#anchor-1925c3\" id=\"anchor-1925c3\" class=\"scrollLink\"><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"body-heading\">The best way to clean strawberries, according to experts<\/h2>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-353b31\" class=\"body-graf\">While contracting an illness from eating fruit is a serious matter, it doesn\u2019t mean you have to cut out all fruit. Washing your produce properly can help you avoid issues and, as a bonus, make your fruit last longer. Remove the sieve from the bowl and let the water drain from the strawberries. <\/li>\n<li>Alternatively, if you don\u2019t have a sieve or colander, fill the bowl with vinegar and water, let the strawberries sit and then drain the water from them. <\/li>\n<li>Transfer the strawberries to a large <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/select\/shopping\/best-cutting-boards-rcna91699\" target=\"_blank\">cutting board<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/select\/shopping\/best-cookie-baking-tools-rcna130409\" target=\"_blank\">baking sheet<\/a> lined with paper towels. Spread them out evenly so they aren\u2019t overlapping. Gently press another paper towel onto the strawberries and dry thoroughly. The dryer the better, since residual moisture will lead to them spoiling faster. <\/li>\n<li>To get them extra dry, transfer the strawberries to a salad spinner. Gently press the top pump at least a few times to spin the strawberries until they are completely dry. This is because, even if they look clean on the surface, berries and other produce are susceptible to dirt, bacteria, fungi and other microbes, according to Handal. \u201cCommercial produce may also carry trace amounts of chemicals and pesticides,\u201d he says. \u201cWashing fresh produce before consuming or preparing meals is imperative and washing methods will vary depending on the type and characteristics of the produce you are preparing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/select\/shopping\/how-to-clean-strawberries-rcna588567#anchor-a730cc\" id=\"anchor-a730cc\" class=\"scrollLink\"><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"body-heading\">How does vinegar help in cleaning strawberries?<\/h2>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a85f02\" class=\"body-graf\">While cool water does a decent job of cleaning surface-level impurities, you can take things a step further by using a combination of water and distilled vinegar, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/renaissance.stonybrookmedicine.edu\/pediatrics\/fellowship\/infectious-diseases\/faculty\/sharon-nachman\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Sharon Nachman<\/a>, a professor of pediatric infectious diseases at <a href=\"https:\/\/renaissance.stonybrookmedicine.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stony Brook University<\/a>. \u201cVinegar is an acid,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd none of the bugs like acid and certainly bacteria don\u2019t like acid.\u201d The vinegar is what releases bugs and bacteria from the surface of the strawberries, she says. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/select\/shopping\/how-to-clean-strawberries-rcna588567#anchor-f464f4\" id=\"anchor-f464f4\" class=\"scrollLink\"><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"body-heading\">Does vinegar kill cyclospora?<\/h2>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-7109e1\" class=\"body-graf\">While vinegar doesn\u2019t kill pathogens, bacteria and parasites such as ones related to cyclospora, it is very acidic, so it \u201cwill help dislodge bacteria and parasites from attachment to fruits and vegetables,\u201d says Nachman. This is why experts recommend using it to clean produce along with running water to further remove debris.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/select\/shopping\/how-to-clean-strawberries-rcna588567#anchor-e0ba94\" id=\"anchor-e0ba94\" class=\"scrollLink\"><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"body-heading\">Should you wash all of your strawberries at once or as you eat them?<\/h2>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-00242c\" class=\"body-graf\">It\u2019s typically better to wash strawberries as you eat or prepare them compared to washing, drying and storing them all at once. That\u2019s because washing them at once makes them more likely to spoil faster due to the buildup of moisture. \u201cStrawberries should be stored, unwashed, in the plastic, clamshell-type containers they were purchased in,\u201d says Handal. \u201cAn alternative would be storing them in a loose, plastic bag.\u201d <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-051fe1\" class=\"body-graf\">While you can technically wash them all at once, it\u2019s crucial to make sure you thoroughly dry them  afterward and store them in a ventilated food container because excess moisture causes them to go bad faster.
