On July 20, 2026, the American Heart Association released a new scientific statement laying out how caffeinated coffee affects heart health, from the safe daily amount to the risks of overdoing it. The statement was published in the association’s flagship journal Circulation and pulled from the latest research on caffeine, heart disease, blood pressure, cholesterol and more. Its lead author, Dr. Gregory M. Marcus of the University of California, San Francisco, called it a fresh look at how one of the world’s most popular drinks fits into a heart-healthy life.

Find out what the guidance now shows.

How Many Cups of Coffee Can We Drink Per Day?

The AHA statement says up to 400 mg of caffeine per day, or the equivalent of about five eight-ounce cups of caffeinated coffee, is generally safe for most adults. The association’s key summary tightens that to no more than three to five cups per day of plain black caffeinated coffee, without added sugars, sweeteners, flavors or fillers. A brewed, non-specialty cup typically contains 9.4 to 20.6 mg of caffeine per fluid ounce.

There is good news for coffee drinkers: Up to five cups of the brew a day are safe for most adults and may even have benefits for heart health, according to a new scientific statement by the American Heart Association. ☕️ https://t.co/deJEwviY9U pic.twitter.com/v5i3GRdYEe

— The Wall Street Journal (@WSJ) July 20, 2026

Does Coffee Reduce the Risk of Heart Disease?

In many cases, yes. The AHA found that drinking two to four cups of caffeinated coffee per day is linked to a lower risk of heart disease, heart failure and stroke. Black caffeinated coffee has also been tied to a lower risk of Type 2 diabetes and some irregular heart rhythms. The catch is what people pour into their cup: sugar, syrups, milk and cream likely dial down those potential benefits.

Published today, Caffeine and Cardiovascular Disease:
A Scientific Statement from the American Heart Association.

Caffeine is rapidly absorbed and metabolized primarily by the liver enzyme CYP1A2, and by antagonizing adenosine receptors it increases sympathetic activity, leading… pic.twitter.com/Mis0j6BbQi

— AHA Science (@AHAScience) July 20, 2026

How Many Cups of Coffee Are Too Much?

Drinking more than four cups of caffeinated coffee per day may specifically increase the risk of heart failure, per the AHA statement, even though up to five cups still falls within the broader safe range. Higher caffeine intake, particularly from energy drinks and energy shots, has been associated with cardiovascular harm, including higher risk of high blood pressure and arrhythmia. Energy drink shots may contain 40 to 69 mg of caffeine per fluid ounce, three to four times more than a regular cup of coffee. Marcus noted that responses to caffeine vary widely from person to person, with age, medications, underlying health conditions and genetics all shaping how the body handles it.

A few cups of black coffee a day can absolutely fit into a heart-healthy routine. The trouble tends to start with energy drinks and specialty pours loaded with sugar and cream, and anyone with existing heart concerns should talk to their doctor before shifting anything at all.

Image Credit: Getty Images There is finally some clarity for anyone who has ever wondered if their morning coffee is doing more harm than good.
