DeChambeau was reportedly so upset that he threatened to not return to play the next day. He later took things a step further when he requested the President of the United States be involved in his efforts to protest the ruling.<\/p>\n<p>A Monday report from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/golf\/2026\/07\/20\/bryson-dechambeau-wanted-trump-intervene-after-open-penalty\/?WT.mc_id=tmgoff_tw_post_trump-intervene-after-open-penalty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Telegraph<\/em><\/a> read:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In his \u201cQuadrilateral\u201d Substack (a publishing platform), respected journalist and course architect Geoff Shackelford claims that in the 30-minute discussions with the R&amp;A \u2013 including chief executive Mark Darbon \u2013 DeChambeau requested Trump\u2019s involvement. It was ultimately denied, as were DeChambeau\u2019s animated pleas to avoid the penalty.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, Darbon was asked if he had received a call from Trump, who he has dealt with before because of Trump\u2019s attempts to persuade the R&amp;A to take the Open back to Turnberry, the links he owns in Ayrshire. \u201cNo,\u201d Darbon said. \u201cI have not received a call from president Trump, and we\u2019ll see what happens from here.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>DeChambeu\u2019s request came in the wake of Trump\u2019s controversial involvement in the FIFA World Cup. U.S. star <strong>Folarin Balogun<\/strong> received a red card in the team\u2019s match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, triggering an automatic suspension for the next round. Days later, FIFA decided to suspend the red card to allow Balogun to play.
