Hardwick <a href=\"https:\/\/decider.com\/2023\/08\/10\/rip-johnny-hardwick-king-of-the-hill-dale-gribble-dead-64\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">passed away<\/a> in August 2023, several months after the <em>King of the Hill<\/em> reboot was confirmed by <a data-nyp-link-source=\"trackonomics\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/clicks.trx-hub.com\/xid\/nypost_01638_decider?p=https%3A%2F%2Fdecider.com%2F2026%2F07%2F20%2Ftoby-huss-king-of-the-hill-interview%2F&amp;q=https%3A%2F%2Fclick.linksynergy.com%2Ffs-bin%2Fclick%3Fid%3DXRMZVUE6JmY%26offerid%3D1589248.206%26type%3D3%26subid%3D0%26u1%3Ddecider&amp;author=Alex%20Vena&amp;articleID=2098435&amp;event_type=click&amp;publishdate=july%2020%2C%202026&amp;linksource=web&amp;primarytag=toby-huss&amp;contentsection=queue-and-a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hulu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs sad as we were, I think <a href=\"http:\/\/decider.com\/tag\/greg-daniels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greg [Daniels]<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/decider.com\/tag\/mike-judge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mike [Judge]<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/decider.com\/tag\/saladin-k-patterson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Saladin Patterson<\/a> kind of decided, you know, interiorly, that I could do the voice [of Dale],\u201d Huss explained to DECIDER during a visit to our studio last week. \u201cAnd I did it at a couple of read-throughs, and they said, \u2018Yeah, that\u2019ll work.\u2019 And they said, \u2018Do you want to do it?\u2019 [I said,] \u2018Of course I want to do it.\u2019 Because he was an old friend, and a sweet guy, and really weirdly talented. He was a nut, but he was our lovely nut, and we loved it. He was great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>King of the Hill<\/em> Season 15 (which marks the second season of its streaming revival) premieres today, though the series has already been renewed for two more seasons at Hulu, cementing the animated comedy as a precious success in a long lineup of reboots. Huss\u2019 co-star <a href=\"http:\/\/decider.com\/tag\/pamela-adlon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pamela Adlon<\/a>\u2014who earned an Emmy nod for reprising her role as Bobby Hill\u2014told DECIDER last year that  the \u201chandmade\u201d and \u201cpresent\u201d nature of the show are what distinguishes it from its revival rivals. For Huss, he credits its \u201ckindness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the day, there\u2019s nothing mean in that show. It\u2019s about kindness, and nothing is ironic in that show,\u201d he explained. \u201cIt\u2019s very sincere, and it\u2019s not a political show. They rarely make a political point on anything. So it\u2019s about a family, and it\u2019s about them being kind to each other and understanding each other, and at its heart, nobody gets to be mean on that show to each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for Huss himself, you\u2019d be hard-pressed to find a hit new show that he hasn\u2019t appeared in. <em>King of the Hill<\/em> aside, the actor has made audiences laugh on shows like <em><a href=\"http:\/\/decider.com\/show\/chad-powers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chad Powers<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/decider.com\/show\/the-four-seasons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Four Seasons<\/a><\/em> Season 2, and even\u2014SPOILER\u2014met an untimely demise as Reverend Bryce on <em><a href=\"http:\/\/decider.com\/show\/widows-bay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Widow\u2019s Bay<\/a><\/em>. DECIDER spoke with Huss about the latest season of <em>King of the Hill<\/em>, rooting for his <em>King of the Hill<\/em> and <em>Widow\u2019s Bay<\/em> co-star Stephen Root in this year\u2019s Emmys race, and whether he\u2019s received a call about returning to <em>The Four Seasons<\/em> for Season 3. Give our chat a read below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DECIDER: I\u2019m so excited to talk about the new season of King of the Hill. This is the second season since its revival last summer. I am curious though: take me back to what it was like receiving that call to return to the show and what your reactions were.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>TOBY HUSS: It was a tough one because we were all still sad about Johnny passing away. And it\u2019s, as sad as we were, I think Greg [Daniels] and Mike [Judge] and Saladin Patterson kind of decided, you know, interiorly, that I could do the voice [of Dale]. And I did it at a couple of read-throughs, and they said, \u201cYeah, that\u2019ll work.\u201d And they said, \u201cDo you want to do it?\u201d [I said,] \u201cOf course I want to do it.\u201d Because he was an old friend, and a sweet guy, and really weirdly talented. He was a nut, but he was our lovely nut, and we loved it. He was great.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Definitely. And taking over the role of Dale Gribble from the late Johnny Hardwick, did you feel like you could infuse kind of your own touches or your own twist on the role? I don\u2019t want to change it too much because what Johnny made was so great. I mean, they had a drawing and had some lines, and Johnny came up with everything of that dude. So then they started writing for what Johnny voiced. So I don\u2019t wanna mess with that. All I\u2019m trying to do is stay in his world. I\u2019ll add my things now and again, but it\u2019s not out of Dale\u2019s world. That\u2019s all I want to do is stay there because his world fits perfectly in the context of the bigger Arlen, Texas, <em>King of the Hill<\/em> world.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>I saw in an interview of yours last year, you were saying you felt like you could kind of take on the role because when you did the original run of the show, you guys would record together and sometimes fill in for each other when someone was out. Has that recording structure or process changed at all? Is it more individualized now?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yeah, you know, it\u2019s all individualized now. We\u2019re not together in the same room as much as we used to be, which was really fun because we were all younger and starting out and we had this little show. So we\u2019d drive to Fox, and we\u2019d all show up at 10, and we would have a read-through, and then we\u2019d go to record it. And it was just fun. We were watching each other grow up, and people had husbands and wives, they got married, and they got divorced, and they had kids. It was great. But that really cemented a lifelong friendship with all of us. So I think coming back\u2014and even though we can\u2019t be in the same room at the same time all the time\u2014we still have such a connection with each other. Yeah, like, Stephen [Root]\u2019s in town.\u00a0I\u2019ll see him and his wife tomorrow.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>That\u2019s awesome. I know one place some of you got to reunite was at Comic-Con last summer.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yeah, yeah.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Will you be back this year?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m going this year, too. You know, I\u2019d never been to one of those things. It\u2019s nuts. Them nerds is crazy, right? Isn\u2019t that the phrase they use? Them nerds is nuts. It was fun! I\u2019d never been to any Comic-Con before, but that was really something else. That was great. Yeah, it was pretty fun.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Last year was my first too, and it was an experience.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oh really, how did you find it? It was nuts, right?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Yes.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Did you have guys sneaking around, looking around pillars at you? Because I did now and again. Like they\u2019d be looking at me and they\u2019d say, \u201cIs that the guy?\u201d They\u2019d look again. Maybe he had a hat on or something, I didn\u2019t know. And they\u2019d sort of slowly crawl up to you. It was interesting. It was pretty funny. I hadn\u2019t been around that for a while.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Well, this season of <em>King of the Hill<\/em> kind of spoofs Comic-Con a little bit in one of the episodes at a sci-fi convention, which I thought was fun. What was it like getting to voice that episode after being at your first Comic-Con last summer?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Well, it\u2019s certainly hard to spoof a Comic-Con, isn\u2019t it? It\u2019s really hard to spoof a thing that\u2019s so wonderfully spoof-able. That\u2019s great. But those are your fans. You know, those are the guys that have been with us since the beginning.\u00a0And they grew up with this group of people in Arlen. And I think aging the people up was such a great idea and also a really difficult idea. I don\u2019t think people realize. Because I don\u2019t want to see Rick and Morty older. That\u2019s awful. I don\u2019t want to see\u00a0an older Morty. Who cares about old Morty? But they were somehow able to take Bobby and make Bobby a little bit older. And people, they kind of took to it pretty quickly. And Dale\u2019s older. Everybody\u2019s older. But it\u2019s\u00a0really interesting.\u00a0 It\u2019s a hard thing to pull off, I think, with Mike and Greg and Saladin, especially. I mean, he really had to sort of walk this very fine line, and he did it; he did a great job.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Completely. And this series has stood out among a slew of recent revivals as one that\u2019s more than worthy of a return. What do you think it was about the series that makes it so timeless?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Well, it\u2019s about, you know, at the end of the day, there\u2019s nothing mean in that show. It\u2019s about kindness, and nothing is ironic in that show. It\u2019s very sincere, and it\u2019s not a political show. They rarely make a political point on anything. So it\u2019s about a family, and it\u2019s about them being kind to each other and understanding each other, and at its heart, nobody gets to be mean on that show to each other. If you watch it, Dale might do something awful, but he\u2019s Dale, and you kind of forgive him. And he understands it as much as he can in his own Dale-like way at the end of the episode. But they\u2019re not mean people. So you get to have a respite from the polarized nature of this country sometimes. And you get to watch these people not be mean to each other and struggle and find their way through life and love on each other a little bit. Something that I love about this revival is that it does pay homage to the original run so well, and continues these original storylines. One that gets continued is Nancy infamously having an affair with John Redcorn, and Dale being completely unaware. However, that affair may have finally come to an end in this season, though Dale still has no knowledge. Do you think he\u2019ll ever find out?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a wonderful part of Dale that I think honestly believes that no one would ever stray from him, that there\u2019s no way Nancy would have something else. Even if he saw some guy, which he probably did. I don\u2019t remember exactly, but he probably saw John Redcorn walking out of his front door at one point in the morning and just went, \u201cHey John.\u201d Didn\u2019t think anything twice about it. So there\u2019s something wonderfully blind about Dale, and there\u2019s something wonderfully blind about a lot of the characters in there. Which is this sweet \u2014 people are blind. We walk around\u2014you got a bunch of blind spots, I hate to tell ya, so do I. We all have little weird blind spots that we can\u2019t see, we can\u2019t access, and Dale\u2019s that dude. I don\u2019t think he ever thinks that Nancy would step out on him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Like <em>King of the Hill<\/em>, you\u2019ve been in some of the year\u2019s most talked-about shows, one of them being <em>Widow\u2019s Bay<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Yeah! What a fun one that was, right?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>I have to ask, what can you share about that experience and working with <a href=\"http:\/\/decider.com\/tag\/matthew-rhys\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matthew Rhys<\/a> on this series?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s really wonderful. He\u2019s really great. And <a href=\"http:\/\/decider.com\/tag\/hiro-murai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hiro [Murai]<\/a>, the director, was really great, and everybody on there was top-notch and really fun. And you could say a line now and again that wasn\u2019t in the script, and they didn\u2019t care; you could improvise something. They were great. And Stephen Root, of course, was killer in that. It\u2019s time to load him up with a couple of Emmys here and there now. He was just great in that, and it was so fun to hang out with all those guys.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Totally, and Stephen received an Emmy nomination for the series.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, man.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And the series got 19 Emmy nominations in total. Have you been in touch with him or any of the cast about this or since the nominations were announced?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oh, of course. Yeah, [if] Steve gets a nod, you\u2019ve got to yell at him, at least in a text, and I\u2019ll see him tomorrow night at my show. And yeah, it would be good to have him around. It\u2019d be a nice Emmy winner. Wouldn\u2019t it be nice? I think, has he won one yet? I don\u2019t know. Maybe for animation. I don\u2019t know if he\u2019s won a live-action one yet. He was nominated for <em>Barry<\/em>, I think. But enough about Stephen Root, all right? We\u2019re not here for Stephen Root, are we? Ladies, please! [Laughs].<\/p>\n<p><strong>And another show you have appeared in this past year, <em>Chad Powers<\/em>, playing Glen Powell\u2019s dad. Have you heard anything about Season 2 or when production might start?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Well, we already wrapped season two, so that\u2019s done. More shenanigans, more shenanigans with makeup. I don\u2019t think you\u2019ll be able to\u2026 You might be able to recognize me in a big scene. Probably not [laughs]. We\u2019ll see. More shenanigans with the old, yeah, Glen Powell. That\u2019s hopefully going to start production soon as well. Have you gotten a call about potentially returning to Season 3?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No, I haven\u2019t. Whatever they decide is great by me. But they\u2019re the greatest. It\u2019s great to watch <a href=\"http:\/\/decider.com\/tag\/tina-fey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tina Fey<\/a> in that because I think she\u2019s doing everything she wants to do with this show. It\u2019s so brilliant, and the actors are so good in that. Great to see Kerri Kenney-Silver come up and really inhabit a place that she hasn\u2019t been able to do yet. So she\u2019s wonderful, and Will Forte is an old buddy. And yeah, Colman [Domingo]\u2019s wonderful, and Marco [Calvani], it\u2019s just, it couldn\u2019t be better, man. It\u2019s so fun. You know, you watch that thing, don\u2019t you? Come on. Yeah. It\u2019s another show where there\u2019s a humanity to it, like <em>King of the Hill<\/em>. There\u2019s a kindness. Even though those people might really get contentious, God, they love each other, and that\u2019s what families do. And they\u2019re a real family on that show. It\u2019s a family they chose. And the ones in Arlen are the family that we chose, too.
