{"id":1156,"date":"2026-07-07T13:45:26","date_gmt":"2026-07-07T08:45:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=1156"},"modified":"2026-07-07T13:45:26","modified_gmt":"2026-07-07T08:45:26","slug":"where-obamacare-enrollment-is-plummeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=1156","title":{"rendered":"Where Obamacare enrollment is plummeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/bKboZ\/fallback.png\" \/><\/p>\n<div>Data: Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services; Map: Danielle Alberti \/ Axios<\/div>\n<p>Ohio, Oklahoma, Arizona, South Carolina and Minnesota have sustained some of the deepest losses in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/02\/10\/obamacare-trump-coverage-rules\" target=\"_blank\">Obamacare<\/a> coverage since beefed-up federal subsidies expired this year, according to state-by-state <a href=\"https:\/\/data.cms.gov\/summary-statistics-on-beneficiary-enrollment\/health-insurance-marketplace\/health-insurance-exchanges-monthly-effectuated-enrollment\/\" target=\"_blank\">federal data<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why it matters: <\/strong>The coverage losses are hitting deep-red states as well as blue ones after Congress <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/12\/05\/republicans-aca-health-care-subsidies\" target=\"_blank\">let the subsidies expire<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><strong>By the numbers: <\/strong>Ohio and Oklahoma each lost nearly a third of their Obamacare enrollment since last year, with other states&#8217; coverage dropping more than a quarter, according to the state breakdown, first reported by the Associated Press.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Indiana, Michigan, Mississippi and Louisiana also had deep coverage losses.<\/li>\n<li>Nationally, Obamacare enrollment fell by about 3 million since last year, or about 13%, according to a separate <a href=\"https:\/\/aspe.hhs.gov\/reports\/aca-exchange-enrollment-2026\" target=\"_blank\">federal report<\/a> from the Department of Health and Human Services last month. <\/li>\n<li>That report attributed the drop-off to improper or fraudulent sign-ups by &#8220;phantom enrollees.&#8221; But health policy experts have pointed to large numbers of people not paying their first ACA premium following the expiration of subsidies.<\/li>\n<li>The pandemic-era enhanced subsidies that Democrats passed in 2021 have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/pro\/health-care-policy\/2023\/11\/06\/republicans-aca-subsidies-red-states-insurance\" target=\"_blank\">overwhelmingly benefited<\/a> red states, especially those that haven&#8217;t expanded Medicaid, according to analysts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What we&#8217;re watching: <\/strong>How Republican candidates in the midterms talk about Obamacare subsidies and the coverage losses \u2014 if they talk about them at all.
