{"id":11440,"date":"2026-07-20T10:31:13","date_gmt":"2026-07-20T05:31:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=11440"},"modified":"2026-07-20T10:31:13","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T05:31:13","slug":"taylor-farms-lettuce-sample-that-tested-positive-for-cyclospora-was-a-false-positive-fda-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=11440","title":{"rendered":"Taylor Farms lettuce sample that tested positive for cyclospora was a false positive, FDA says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>A sample of lettuce from Taylor Farms that had tested positive for <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cyclospora-outbreak-foods-to-avoid\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">cyclospora<\/a><\/span> was a false positive, the Food and Drug Administration said Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Due to the complexity in detection of Cyclospora, FDA laboratory experts re-reviewed the sample results and have concluded that the finding does not represent true amplification and should be considered a false positive,&#8221; the FDA said.<\/p>\n<p>In the statement announcing the false positive, the FDA said that as of Sunday it had not found any &#8220;confirmed positive sample results for product testing for Cyclospora.&#8221; \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Taylor Farms on Friday <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/taylor-farms-pulls-iceberg-lettuce\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">said it was &#8220;voluntarily removing&#8221; iceberg lettuce<\/a><\/span> sourced from central Mexico after the lettuce had been linked to one of the largest outbreaks of cyclosporiasis in the U.S. in recent years.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While the FDA traceback is indicating a specific independent farm, which represents less than 1% of the U.S.&#8217;s iceberg lettuce supply, as the potential source of the outbreak, we have removed all iceberg lettuce from the region indefinitely,&#8221; the company said Friday in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.taylorfarms.com\/newsroom\/taylor-fresh-foods-statement-regarding-cyclospora-outbreak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Taylor Farms <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/YourTaylorFarms\/status\/2079037403973738528\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said Sunday in a statement<\/a> after the false positive was announced that, &#8220;Our thoughts remain with everyone who has fallen ill in this outbreak. We are committed to working with public health authorities as the ongoing outbreak investigation continues.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified lettuce\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cyclosporiasis-outbreak-taco-bell-lettuce-mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">supplied to select Taco Bell<\/a><\/span>\u00a0restaurants as a source of the multistate outbreak, more than a month after cases first began to appear.<\/p>\n<p>The iceberg lettuce was distributed to Taco Bell restaurants in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia, according to the CDC. Taco Bell said on Friday it had &#8220;completed removal of affected Taylor Farms lettuce from our restaurants.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Walmart also announced over the weekend it had removed four\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/outbreaks-foodborne-illness\/investigation-5-state-outbreak-cyclospora-illnesses-iceberg-lettuce-july-2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marketside bagged iceberg lettuce salad products<\/a>\u00a0from its stores in more than two dozen states, but added there was &#8220;no indication that products sold in our stores are affected by the current Cyclospora investigations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The outbreak, first reported in May, has spread to 34 states and sickened more than 1,600 people, according to the CDC. However, the CDC&#8217;s tally lags behind state health departments, which have reported much larger numbers of cases.
